THE POSITION

To perform a wide variety of paraprofessional technical and clerical library work related to such activities as cataloging, classification, circulation and assisting patrons.  The purpose of this recruitment is to fill a vacancy in the Woodland Public Library, as well as establish an eligibility list for future vacancies.

 

IDEAL CANDIDATE

The Ideal Candidate will have experience working in a library, as well as excellent customer service skills. The Library Technical Assistant position assists the librarians in all aspects of library work.  This particular position will focus on supporting the children’s and teen library divisions as well as outreach to the community. The Ideal Candidate will have strong interpersonal skills, and enjoy working in a team. Ability to work nights and weekends is required.  Ability to understand and speak Spanish is highly desirable.


ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Library Technical Assistant I:  This is the entry level class in the paraprofessional Library Technical Assistant series.  This class is distinguished from the Library Technical Assistant II level by the assignment of the more routine and repetitive duties that are performed according to established procedures and under immediate supervision.  Under this concept, positions assigned to the classification of Library Technical Assistant II which become vacant may reasonably be filled at the Library Technical Assistant I level.

Library Technical Assistant II:  This is the journey level class in the Library Technical Assistant series.  These positions may be filled by advancement from the Library Technical Assistant I level or, when filled from the outside, require prior library technical experience.  Appointment to the Library Technical Assistant II level requires that the employee be performing the full range of duties and meet the qualification standards.  A Library Technical Assistant II is expected to perform assigned duties with only occasional instruction or assistance, and work is normally reviewed only on completion.  Adequate performance at this level requires the knowledge of general department policies and procedures.

The following are typical illustrations of duties encompassed by the job class, not an all-inclusive or limiting list:

Serve at a circulation desk, check books in and out of library; issue library cards; conduct and oversee inventories and processing of books and other library materials; maintain bibliographic records; and establish and maintain collection files and records. Provide general information to the public pertaining to library services and programs. Operate and maintain various library-related equipment and general office equipment. Perform standard office support work such as answering telephones, ordering supplies, maintaining files and operating computer terminals. Regular, predictable, consistent and timely attendance is an essential function of the position, in that Employee must be present to work to complete assigned tasks.  Work cooperatively with others.  Under supervision, conduct various special programs and community outreach activities such as story hours and reading programs. May train and assign routine tasks and provide technical instruction to part-time positions in area of responsibility. Locate books and other materials using indices, catalog guides, and computers. Assist patrons in completing requests for materials not available in the local collection and verify completeness of requests; receive and process inter-library loan requests; maintain inter-library loan services. Prepare displays and exhibits. Post, file, maintain recurring accumulative records; compile data and prepare summary activity reports including circulation statistics, user and loan survey reports and materials collection lists. Perform related duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying.  A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:

Library Technical Assistant I
Education
:  Equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade.
Experience:  One (1) year of experience performing general clerical or related work in a public library system.

Library Technical Assistant II
Education:
  Equivalent to an Associate Degree in Library Service or related field.
Experience:  Two (2) years of technical and clerical library experience performing duties comparable to those of a Library Technical Assistant I for the City of Woodland.  Please note:  Additional qualifying experience can substitute for the required education on a year-for-years basis up to two years.

Library Technical Assistant I
$3,157.20 - $4,029.49 /month
$1,457.17 - $1,859.77 /bi-weekly
 

Library Technical Assistant II
$3,484.97 - $4,447.80 /month
$1,608.45 - $2,052.83 /bi-weekly

 

BENEFITS

Future Salary COLAs:      
4% increase (eff July 2024), 1% increase (eff January 2025), 4% increase (eff July 2025) and 1% increase (eff January 2026)

Retirement:                            
CalPERS Retirement System (2 % @ 60 formula for Classic CalPERS members and 2% @ 62 formula for new CalPERS members).  The City does not participate in social security

Deferred Compensation:                    
Choice of deferred compensation plans (Traditional and Roth) with 1% City-match effective July 2024.  After successful completion of probation, new hires are also eligible for a 2% City contribution.

Medical:                                 
CalPERS Medical Insurance Plans, including HMOs and PPOs.  City gives an allowance toward the cost of insurance.  Maximum Family Medical Allowance (2024): $2,463.99 per month

Dental/Vision:                         
City paid Delta Dental and VSP Vision Benefits

LTD/STD:                               
City paid wage protection for long/short term disabilities

Life Insurance:                      
City provides $50,000 life insurance policy

Supplemental Benefits:        
Voluntary Supplemental Life, Cancer, Accident Only, STD/LTD and Critical Illness insurance, and Flexible Spending Accounts available

Vacation:                                
6.7 hours per month during first three years of service

Holidays:                                
12.5 paid holidays (including two floating holidays)

Sick Leave:                            
8 hours per month

Bilingual Pay:                        
$200 per month upon certification

Professional Growth Incentive:         
$625 per fiscal year for education or professional activities
