Description

THE POSITION

To perform a variety of skilled and semiskilled horticulture tasks in the construction, maintenance and repair of parks, pools, recreation, and cemetery facilities and buildings.  The purpose of this recruitment is to hire multiple temporary/part-time positions.  Candidates who do not currently meet the minimum qualifications for the Park Maintenance Worker I position may be considered for an Intern position instead.

Temporary/part-time employees work no more than 130 hours per month and 960 hours per fiscal year.

 

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Performing general grounds cleaning, including emptying trash receptacles, mopping, sweeping, and raking City park and recreation sites as needed. Water, mow, cultivate, prune, weed, renovate, and fertilize grass, plants, trees, flowers, and shrubs. Operate power mowers, chain saws, rototillers, aerators, hedgers, spreaders, front-end loader, edgers, air compressors, and other equipment. Utilize proper safety precautions related to all performed work. Drive vehicles and equipment as required. Prepare and maintain athletic fields and related facilities, swimming pools, and cemetery/interment operations.  Regular and consistent attendance.

 

OTHER JOB FUNCTIONS

Install, maintain and replace playground equipment and fences; assemble tables, benches and bleachers. Works as a member of the City pest control crew spraying various fertilizers, herbicides, pesticides, and other related chemicals in City park and recreation areas. Respond to inquiries from the general public. Install, maintain and repair irrigation systems. Assist in setting up community services and special events. Maintain, repair and replace plumbing systems and fixtures such as light switches, motors, wall receptacles, conduits, faucets, drinking fountains, water heaters, water closet, urinals, water regulators and pressure valves.  Work cooperatively with others. Work any shift including weekends and holidays. Perform related duties as assigned.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

Park Maintenance Worker I

Education:  High School Diploma or equivalent.

Experience:  Six (6) months of experience in the care and maintenance of landscapes or facilities.

License and Certificate:  Required upon hire, possession of a valid California Driver’s License

 

THE ABILITY TO SPEAK AND UNDERSTAND SPANISH IS A DESIRABLE QUALIFICATION
FOR ALL POSITIONS.

 

WORK HOURS

Work hours vary by assignment and may be required to work evenings, weekends and/or holidays.  Position typically works 25-30 hours per week.   

 

SALARY - Based on experience and years of service

Park Maintenance Worker I
$21.96 - $28.03 per hour

Intern
$16.50 - $20.50 per hour

Employees are paid bi-weekly.  Temporary/Part-time employees work no more than 130 hours per month and 960 hours per fiscal year.

With the exception of Worker’s Compensation Coverage and sick leave, no other benefits are provided.  Employees must contribute 1.45% of salary to Medicare and 7.5% to a retirement plan in accordance with Federal law.
