Description

The Town of Colma Recreation Services Department is currently accepting applications for Recreation Leaders for Summer 2024.  The Recreation Department provides programs and activities for Colma residents of all ages ranging from infants to seniors. Program elements include fitness, enrichment, cultural events, special events, sporting events, trips, and community events. It is the goal of the Recreation Department to offer a balanced program ensuring all elements are offered to all age groups throughout the year. This is a part-time position. Hours will range from 20-37 hours per week.

This position is under direct supervision of the Recreation Coordinator. Leaders will be responsible for planning, coordinating, and implementing the Summer Day Camp at Sterling Park.

Ideal Candidate

WHAT DOES A RECREATION LEADER DO?

Typical duties may include, but are not limited to:

  • Coming up with ideas for summer activities and willingness to participate and lead activities
  • Maintain a clean and orderly workspace, including supply closets and storage areas
  • Being enthusiastic and enjoy working outdoors with children
  • Responsible for opening and closing facilities
  • Work at a variety of City special events and programs
  • Assists in maintaining discipline and encourage observance of required safety precautions
  • Leads participants on group outings and field trips, and chaperone participants during transport
  • May provide light janitorial and light maintenance services
  • Maintains records of participation, supplies and equipment, as well as report injuries and accidents
  • Responds appropriately to emergencies including the application of basic first aid
  • Work a flexible schedule including evenings and weekends
  • Follow written and oral instructions and procedures
  • Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, by using proper grammar, spelling and punctuation
  • Enforces Town of Colma departmental policies
  • Performs routine clerical tasks, including learning the Recreation software
  • Performs other duties as assigned

 

CERTIFICATES

Applicants must maintain a current CPR/First Aid Certification or the ability to obtain within the 60 days of employment.  

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE 

  • Attending High School or a higher education
  • Desire to guide, lead, and work with school age children
  • Volunteer hours (preferred) 
  • Leader in Training hours (preferred)

Benefits

Part-time/temporary "casual" employees accrue one hour of sick leave per every 30 hours worked up to an accrual cap of 48 hours or six days in accordance with California's Paid Sick Leave Law (AB 1522).  No other benefits are offered with this position.

Recreation Leader Requirement:

  • Must be available for paid training – June 3 - June 7, 2024
  • Must be available for camp season – June 10 - August 9, 2024
  • Camp closed – Thursday, July 4 and Friday, July 5 for the Holiday
  • Mandatory training: Saturday, June 1, 2024

Prior to appointment, the final candidates must pass a TB skin test.  Final candidates over the age of 18 must receive favorable results for fingerprint submission from the Department of Justice.  For those candidates who are under the age of 18 at time of appointment, fingerprint submission to the Department of Justice will be processed after reaching age 18.  A work permit is also required at the time of appointment for candidates who are attending High School.
