Description

The City of Dixon is preparing for the 2024 Aquatic season and is recruiting qualified Lifeguard/ Swim Instructor I/II applicants.

Under the direction of the Recreation Supervisor and Senior Lifeguard/Swim Instructor, Lifeguard/Swim Instructor performs a variety of duties to ensure the City of Dixon swimming pool is a safe and enjoyable aquatic facility. Supervises pool patrons, enforces pool rules, performs first aid and emergency rescues, instructs swim lessons, performs cashiering duties, leads recreational activities; performs related and other work as required.

Staff may be expected to work weekends and on fixed holidays.  Those who work on a City Holiday will earn 1 1/2 times their base hourly salary.

This position is subject to random controlled substance testing and/or breath alcohol testing.

Employment Processing: Those selected are subject to pre-employment drug testing and fingerprinting. In accordance with Federal law, an employee must provide proof of identity and proof that they may legally work in the United States.

Veteran's Preference Points: Veteran's Preference Points will be applied in accordance with the City's Personnel Rules & Regulations. A copy of the DD214 form must be filed at the time of application.

Ideal Candidate

Any combination equivalent to experience and education that would provide the knowledge and abilities would be qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be: 

Education: Must be currently enrolled in or graduated from an educational institute working toward a high school diploma or G.E.D equivalent.

Experience: None. Highly desirable: One (1) year experience as a volunteer, lifeguard, or swim instructor at an organized Aquatics facility assisting with public swim sessions and/or lesson instruction.

Other Requirements: 

Must possess the following certificates at time of employment:

  • Current Lifeguard Training Certificate
  • Current Standard First Aid Certificate
  • Current Basic Life Support for the Professional Rescuer Certificate
  • Title 22 Certificate

The City of Dixon Recreation Department will be offering Lifeguard certification courses for the following dates:

  • Option 1: March 16, 17, 23, & 24
  • Option 2: April 1-4 (Spring Break)
  • Option 3: April 21, 27, 28, & May 5

All Lifeguard certification courses are tentatively scheduled to be from 8am-5pm.  Please check this link for course registration information.

Must be at least 15 years of age by time of employment.

Spanish language skills desirable, incentive offered.

CalPERS Annuitants will be limited to only 960 hours in a fiscal year.

Special Instructions

LENGTH OF EMPLOYMENT:  Temporary/Seasonal Employment

Aquatics Season: March 2024 - October 2024 for programs offered at the Pat Granucci Aquatic Center.

Staff can average between 5-20 hours per week based on the season, needs of the program, and staff availability.  Staff may be required to work weekends and holidays.

SELECTION PROCEDURE:

Exam Process:  Only a limited number of candidates, whose applications indicate that, among those competing, they are better qualified in terms of related experience, will be invited to participate in the recruitment process, which will consist of:

Oral Interview (weighted 100%). 

Knowledge and Abilities:  Knowledge of leadership techniques; of instructional aquatics activities and equipment; of the principals and techniques of first aid, water safety, and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), and Automated External Defibrillator (AED).
