Temporary Maintenance Worker – Parks & Roadsides 

Salary: $20.00/hour

DEFINITION 

Perform a variety of general maintenance services for parks and roadsides and other areas as assigned within the Town.   

• This is a part-time temporary, non-benefitted position. 
• Flexible schedule up to 29 hours per week, which may include weekend work; not to exceed 950 hours per calendar year. The schedule for this position would be Friday through Monday. 

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED 

General supervision is received from the Maintenance Supervisor. May exercise supervision of Work Alternative Program participants as assigned. 

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS/DUTIES 

Essential duties are inclusive of, but not limited to the following:  

• Clean up trash in and around Town-maintained park and roadside areas. 
• Operate a variety of equipment, including: half ton and three-quarter ton trucks, Cushman and golf cart (or similar) vehicles, blowers and other two-cycle equipment, and hand tools (i.e., shovel, rake, hoe, etc.). 
• Periodically groom sports fields and bocce ball courts with equipment and/or machinery provided. 
• Prepare baseball fields and bocce ball courts for league play. 
• Assist Maintenance Services personnel on assigned projects.  

• Perform duties within OSHA standards. 

QUALIFICATIONS 

Knowledge of: 

• Construction and maintenance materials, methods, and terminology. 

• The use, purposes and maintenance of hand tools; and the operation of light and moderately heavy power-driven equipment in performing duties. 

Ability to: 

• Understand and follow oral and written directions. 
• Ability to work both in a supervised and unsupervised environment. 
• Perform manual labor for extended periods of time; and operate under tight deadlines. 
• Lift equipment and materials up to 50 lbs. 
• Work flexible hours. 

EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION 

Any combination of experience and education that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying.  A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be: 

Education: 

Equivalent to completion of the eighth grade. Graduation from high school or equivalent is preferred. 

Experience: 

Landscape and/or irrigation maintenance experience is desirable. 

LICENCE(S) AND CERTIFICATION(S) 

Possession of a valid California State Driver’s License, or license in another state with the ability to obtain a California license within 30 days of hire and good driving record.

DEFINITION

Under the supervision of the Plant and Equipment Maintenance Manager, does skilled mechanical work in repairing and installing equipment in the Water and Wastewater systems; and performs other duties as assigned.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

Installs, replaces and repairs pumps, motors, generators, and auxiliary equipment; levels and aligns equipment to prevent vibration; installs and connects instruments, gauges, tubing, pipes, instrument panels, switches and valves; dismantles pumps, compressors, motors and generators for inspection of worn or broken parts and makes appropriate adjustments, replacements and repairs; keeps written and computerized records of repairs and maintenance services performed; furnishes Plant and Equipment Maintenance Manager with information for parts and inventory control; assists operators and maintenance personnel in the general maintenance of equipment and facilities of the Department of Water and Wastewater Resources; may be required to work under adverse conditions.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge of:           The installation, operation and repair of pumps, compressors, motors, generators and related equipment; mechanical ability and skill in the use of tools and materials involved in the installation, maintenance and repair of mechanical and electrical equipment; use of welding equipment and cutting torch; knowledge of pipe and pipe fitting installations; use of appropriate safety equipment and tools and principles of safety and accident prevention.

Ability to:       Safely diagnose and repair mechanical and electrical defects; read, understand and work from blueprints, diagrams and installation sketches; understand and follow written and oral directions; prepare reports and keep accurate records; learn and efficiently use the Department's computerized maintenance information system; instruct others in maintenance and repair of the Department's equipment and facilities; perform heavy manual labor involving lifting, carrying, kneeling, crawling and climbing; work in adverse conditions which require exposure to noise, noxious odors, gases, contact with water and/or wastewater, and risk of bodily injury; maintain different tools and equipment in the fresh water and wastewater systems; interact positively and cooperate with co-workers, respond politely to customers, work as a team member, function under demanding time pressure, respond in a positive manner to supervision, and attend work and perform duties on a regular and consistent basis.

Education:     Graduation from high school or equivalent.

Experience:    Three years of experience in the operation, maintenance and repair of electrical and/or mechanical equipment.

Physical Requirements:       Moderate and sometimes strenuous exertion required, including sustained walking, standing, bending, climbing and lifting.

License: Possession of a valid Class C California Driver's License.

The City of Lincoln is hiring for the position of Maintenance Worker I/II within the Streets Division of the Public Works Department.  Under general supervision, this position performs the full array of duties assigned to classes in the Maintenance Worker series including maintenance, construction and equipment operation work in one or more Public Works divisions; occasionally assists in the training of lower-level Maintenance Workers; and performs other related duties as required.

Maintenance Worker I

The Maintenance Worker I is the entry level class responsible for a wide variety of maintenance and construction tasks. This classification is alternatively staffed with Maintenance Worker II and incumbents may advance to the higher-level after gaining experience and demonstrating a level of proficiency that meets the qualifications of the higher-level class.

Maintenance Worker II

The Maintenance Worker II is the journey level class responsible for a wide variety of maintenance and construction tasks. This classification is distinguished from the next higher classification of Senior Maintenance Worker in that the latter performance the more complex assignments and lead responsibilities.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED/EXERCISED

The Maintenance Worker I receives general supervision from a Public Works Supervisor.  Incumbents of this class do not routinely exercise supervision.  The Maintenance Worker II receives general supervision from a Public Works Supervisor. May exercise technical and functional supervision over assigned staff. 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Include but are not limited to the following:

• Performs maintenance, repair, construction, equipment operation and installation work in streets, water, sewers, refuse collection, parks and buildings.

• Parks and Buildings: Maintains lawns, shrubs, and trees; assists in spraying of herbicides and pesticides; cuts, sprays and removes weeds; clears brush and debris; assists with planting and maintenance of landscaped areas; installs, maintains, repairs and programs irrigation systems; cleans and maintains parks and city buildings; assists in the performance of minor carpentry, plumbing, electrical, painting and remodeling tasks.
• Solid Waste: Operates a variety of collection vehicles and equipment including front, rear and side loaders in the collection and transportation of residential and commercial refuse; drives to landfill site when vehicle is full and unloads material; evaluates and updates assigned routes; cleans, maintains and inspects assigned vehicles; maintains daily logs.
• Fills out reports and work orders; climbs or uses hydraulic aerial devices to top, trim, reshape, strip, treat and remove trees; operates airport fueling vehicles; responds to after-hours call-outs if assigned.
• Demonstrates a full understanding of applicable policies, procedures and work methods associated with assigned duties; may provide training to lower-level staff; responds to questions and concerns from the general public; provides information as is appropriate and resolves public service complaints.

PHYSICAL, MENTAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL WORKING CONDITIONS

Position requires sitting, standing, walking on level and slippery surfaces, reaching, twisting, turning, kneeling, bending, stooping, squatting, crouching, grasping and making repetitive hand movement in the performance of daily duties. The position also requires both near and far vision when inspecting work and operating assigned equipment. The need to lift, carry and push tools, equipment and supplies weighing 25 pounds or more is also required. Additionally, the incumbent in this outdoor position works in all weather conditions including wet, hot and cold. The incumbent may use cleaning and lubricating chemicals, pesticides or herbicides which may expose the employee to fumes, dust and air contaminants. The nature of the work also requires the incumbent to climb ladders, use power and noise producing tools and equipment, operate hydraulic aerial devices, drive motorized vehicles and heavy equipment, work in heavy vehicle traffic conditions and often work with constant interruptions.

Job Description

This position performs preventive, routine and emergency maintenance and repair of a variety of heavy and light industrial and marine equipment, related systems and components. The incumbent will operate precision equipment and respond to trouble calls associated with the Port's ferry terminal systems, boats, sewer pumps and other Port related equipment. The Maintenance Worker I will support the basic preventative maintenance of the air conditioning work group. A Water Resources Mechanic I performs a range of tasks requiring journey level mechanical ability and aptitude. Work assignments are performed according to established rules and procedures. Independent judgment is required and is supported at regular intervals by supervisory review and direction. A Water Resources Mechanic II is distinguished from the WR Mechanic I by the possession of advanced journey level mechanical ability and aptitude and is responsible for solving more difficult technical problems.

Position Summary

Under general supervision, the Ferry Mechanic performs preventative, scheduled and unscheduled maintenance, trouble-shooting, repair, and modifications on structural, mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, piping and control systems found on ferry vessels and passenger terminals; performs related work as assigned. Responsibilities include record keeping and written verification of work accomplished.
 

Essential Responsibilities

• Working with computers on a daily basis for work scheduling, work order entry and work order reporting on the Districts electronic maintenance system in addition to notifications and communications.

Minimum Qualifications

Education and/or Experience: 

• Completion of a four (4) year apprenticeship program, or approved equivalent as a heavy equipment or marine mechanic OR four (4) years of progressively responsible journey level full-time work experience performing to the maintenance and repair of heavy equipment which should include mechanical, electrical or welding repair, and at least one year in an industrial environment.
• Experience in corrective and preventative maintenance records using a computer-based maintenance management information system
• Experience in utilizing MS Windows based software for data entry, work order processing and materials requisitioning

Required License:  

• Must possess and maintain a current, valid California driver's license and satisfactory driving record (Operates District Vehicles).
• No DUI’s or Reckless Driving codes within the last 7 years. 
• No more than two moving violations within the last 3 years.

Required Tools:

• Must have a full set of journey level hand tools to accomplish assigned work.

Hours:

• Shifts are scheduled based on seniority.
• The Ferry Maintenance Department operates 7 days per week, except Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year’s day.
• Must be available to work all shifts; some overtime maybe required to handle emergencies.

Physical Requirement:  

Requires frequent and extensive physical activities such as: lifting and manipulating up to 50 lbs., bending, standing, stooping, kneeling, twisting, climbing, gripping, and other movements related to essential duties. Work around fumes, odors and dust in an occasionally high noise level environment with appropriate personal protective equipment. The City of Foster City is recruiting for a part-time Public Works Maintenance Worker in the Public Works Department. The is a part-time non-benefited position working approximately 20 hours per week, and no benefits are provided.

THE POSITION

General Purpose:
This Recreation Aide position will be assigned to the Family Programs area assisting Recreation Leaders in providing support for the After-School Recreation program.
 
Supervision Received and Exercised:
Receive general supervision from a Recreation Coordinator and may receive technical and/or functional supervision from a Recreation Leader or Program Specialist.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• Assist in leading recreation activities in program areas such as preschool, playground, parks, teens, sports, special events, and senior citizen activities.
• Assist in carrying out recreational activities appropriate to a variety of locations such as playgrounds, parks, community centers, pre-school classrooms, school sites, and sports facilities.  
• Assist in leading activities in areas such as arts and crafts, games, sports, music, drama, and nature study.
• Assist in setting up, taking down, and cleaning up recreational facilities; as assigned, open and close facilities as scheduled for use, and secure the facility upon leaving.
• May provide minor first aid to recreation program participants and/or perform related first aid/emergency techniques.
• Exercise precautions necessary to ensure the safety of recreation program participants and spectators.
• Build and maintain positive working relationships with co-workers, other City employees and the public using principles of good customer service.
• Set up furniture or equipment for activities scheduled and see that it is in proper condition and is replaced after use.
• Monitor activities of facility users for appropriate and safe conduct.
• Clean up after facility users and set up for subsequent activities; sweep and mop floors as required, empty trash receptacles throughout the facility, as necessary; keep restrooms and kitchen clean and well stocked with paper towels, tissues, etc.
• Collect fees from public swimming pool patrons and aquatics class registrants, and issue pool passes.
• Complete daily attendance and cash receipt report forms.
• Answer the telephone, provide information to callers and write messages, as needed.
• Assist customers at the front counter. 
• Perform general clerical work such as issuing receipts, photocopying, and filing; complete and submit required forms and reports.
• Clean and sanitize workstation and equipment.
• Assist in conducting preschool class activities in areas such as arts and crafts, games, music, or story time.
• Notify appropriate City staff regarding necessary repair and/or replacement of play areas/related equipment.
• Perform other duties as assigned.
