DEFINITION

Under the supervision of the Plant and Equipment Maintenance Manager, does skilled mechanical work in repairing and installing equipment in the Water and Wastewater systems; and performs other duties as assigned.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

Installs, replaces and repairs pumps, motors, generators, and auxiliary equipment; levels and aligns equipment to prevent vibration; installs and connects instruments, gauges, tubing, pipes, instrument panels, switches and valves; dismantles pumps, compressors, motors and generators for inspection of worn or broken parts and makes appropriate adjustments, replacements and repairs; keeps written and computerized records of repairs and maintenance services performed; furnishes Plant and Equipment Maintenance Manager with information for parts and inventory control; assists operators and maintenance personnel in the general maintenance of equipment and facilities of the Department of Water and Wastewater Resources; may be required to work under adverse conditions.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge of:           The installation, operation and repair of pumps, compressors, motors, generators and related equipment; mechanical ability and skill in the use of tools and materials involved in the installation, maintenance and repair of mechanical and electrical equipment; use of welding equipment and cutting torch; knowledge of pipe and pipe fitting installations; use of appropriate safety equipment and tools and principles of safety and accident prevention.

Ability to:       Safely diagnose and repair mechanical and electrical defects; read, understand and work from blueprints, diagrams and installation sketches; understand and follow written and oral directions; prepare reports and keep accurate records; learn and efficiently use the Department's computerized maintenance information system; instruct others in maintenance and repair of the Department's equipment and facilities; perform heavy manual labor involving lifting, carrying, kneeling, crawling and climbing; work in adverse conditions which require exposure to noise, noxious odors, gases, contact with water and/or wastewater, and risk of bodily injury; maintain different tools and equipment in the fresh water and wastewater systems; interact positively and cooperate with co-workers, respond politely to customers, work as a team member, function under demanding time pressure, respond in a positive manner to supervision, and attend work and perform duties on a regular and consistent basis.

Education:     Graduation from high school or equivalent.

Experience:    Three years of experience in the operation, maintenance and repair of electrical and/or mechanical equipment.

Physical Requirements:       Moderate and sometimes strenuous exertion required, including sustained walking, standing, bending, climbing and lifting.

License: Possession of a valid Class C California Driver's License.

Position Summary

Under general supervision, the Ferry Mechanic performs preventative, scheduled and unscheduled maintenance, trouble-shooting, repair, and modifications on structural, mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, piping and control systems found on ferry vessels and passenger terminals; performs related work as assigned. Responsibilities include record keeping and written verification of work accomplished.
 

Essential Responsibilities

• Working with computers on a daily basis for work scheduling, work order entry and work order reporting on the Districts electronic maintenance system in addition to notifications and communications.
• Conducts tests, analyses and measurements as directed to diagnose any unusual, erratic or malfunctioning occurrence in any shipboard or terminal system or component.
• Reports any unusual wear patterns, noise, pressure, temperature, or changes in voltage, current, cycles, resistance or any other indication of potential malfunction.
• References manufacturer schematics including blueprints, drawings and specifications to resolve maintenance issues.
• References parts catalogues and other sources to determine correct parts for specific applications.
• Performs inspections, preventive maintenance, repairs and overhauls as directed.
• Documents and records work performed and parts and materials used in the electronic maintenance system. 
• Reports all safety hazards and corrects unsafe situations immediately where possible.
• Immediately reports to supervisor any potential maintenance problem or condition which could cause a possible schedule delay.

Minimum Qualifications

Education and/or Experience: 

• Completion of a four (4) year apprenticeship program, or approved equivalent as a heavy equipment or marine mechanic OR four (4) years of progressively responsible journey level full-time work experience performing to the maintenance and repair of heavy equipment which should include mechanical, electrical or welding repair, and at least one year in an industrial environment.
• Experience in corrective and preventative maintenance records using a computer-based maintenance management information system
• Experience in utilizing MS Windows based software for data entry, work order processing and materials requisitioning

Required License:  

• Must possess and maintain a current, valid California driver's license and satisfactory driving record (Operates District Vehicles).
• No DUI’s or Reckless Driving codes within the last 7 years. 
• No more than two moving violations within the last 3 years.

Required Tools:

• Must have a full set of journey level hand tools to accomplish assigned work.

Hours:

• Shifts are scheduled based on seniority.
• The Ferry Maintenance Department operates 7 days per week, except Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year’s day.
• Must be available to work all shifts; some overtime maybe required to handle emergencies.

Physical Requirement:  

Requires frequent and extensive physical activities such as: lifting and manipulating up to 50 lbs., bending, standing, stooping, kneeling, twisting, climbing, gripping, and other movements related to essential duties. Work around fumes, odors and dust in an occasionally high noise level environment with appropriate personal protective equipment. Ability to work in a constant state of alertness and in a safe manner. Ability to wear a respirator and be fit tested. Must wear hearing protections when performing certain duties.

THE OPPORTUNITY

The City of Pacifica is recruiting for a Public Works Superintendent within the Department of Public Works. Under direction of the Field Services Manager, the incumbents will be responsible for the field services of the Public Works Department. They will plan, organize, and direct the work of field personnel and perform related work as required. What You’ll Do

• Perform skilled tasks in the mechanical repair and maintenance of diesel and gas-powered apparatus, vehicles, hydraulic systems for aerial ladders, and other like equipment.

About the Highway Program Deputy Director

The Highway Program Deputy Director, reporting to the Chief of Engineering and Program Delivery, manages a diverse and talented team of seasoned staff who is well-versed on the delivery of capital projects related to the State highway system and other roadways in the county. Wastewater Mechanic - Maintenance Division

Wastewater Mechanics for the Maintenance Division are responsible for performing the full range of technical and mechanical tasks associated with the preventive and corrective maintenance of wastewater plant machinery and equipment. In this job, you may assist Sr. Wastewater Mechanics in the more difficult and complex duties. You will have the opportunity to attend training to understand the equipment better and keep current on trends. Mechanics are expected to work well independently and on teams.

The following is a partial list of Wastewater Mechanics typical responsibilities in the Maintenance section:

Wastewater Mechanic - Energy and Automation Division

Wastewater Mechanics (also known as Cogen Operator / Diesel Mechanic) in the Energy and Automation Division are responsible for operating, maintaining and overhauling the Facility's industrial mechanical and electrical equipment related to large stationary diesel-ignited/spark-ignited engine driven blowers and/or power generators, gas compressors and gas storage such as commonly found in municipal power plants, natural gas pipeline compressor stations and large marine propulsion systems. The Wastewater Mechanics (Cogen Operator / Diesel Mechanics) often work in teams of two while performing preventative maintenance, repairs, and overhauls on Facility equipment. This team provides 24/7 staffing and are typically assigned to rotating shifts including nights, weekends and holidays.

The Cogen Operator / Diesel Mechanics also perform tasks including, but not limited to, the following:

• Preventive maintenance and inspections of all equipment in the Power and Air (P&A) section.
• Use precision measuring tools, granite table, non destructive testing, Prussian blue, polishing stones, fitting bearings to shafts.
• Various welding disciplines (such as arc, tig, mig) as well as oxy-acetylene and plasma/carbon arc cutting.

• Fabricate specialty tools, obsolete engine parts, and fixtures.

• Interpret drawings, service manuals and parts manuals.

• Provides support for and participates in a variety of City events, such as staff luncheons, senior luncheons, Brown Bag program, Youth in Government program, Youth Advisory Committee events, and other City functions; may be assigned responsibility for transportation of participants, equipment, and/or delivery of goods; may be assigned to decorate, setup, or run portions of events;
• Serves as a liaison for special events; receives and manages special event applications from the public; provides information to Director for staff reports to City Council; coordinates necessary interdepartmental tasks as needed for events;  distributes applications and tasks to required individuals; acts as point person for the City;
• Provides effective customer service both in-person and on the phone; interacts with community members; conducts registrations; attends tabling events; may assist with front-office coverage;
• Attends meetings, workshops, and other related duties as required; and
• Performs related duties as assigned.

JOB-RELATED QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge of: Principals, techniques, and practices involved in the delivery of recreation services; recreation program development, organization, and planning; techniques in promoting recreation programs; safety standards and practices; basic principles of lead direction; common recreation activities and sports; department rules and regulations; first aid and CPR.

Ability to: Work with Microsoft Office programs; exercise independent judgment in performing job responsibilities; direct volunteer and paid staff using positive communication skills; organize and/or direct groups and individuals participating in pre-school age, youth, adult, and/or senior recreation programs and special events; think and act quickly in emergencies; work to maintain and help create an action-oriented atmosphere with both the public and staff; understand and carry out written and oral directions. establish and maintain cooperative relationships with subordinates, peers, and supervisors; practice basic recreation skills in a variety of areas.

EDUCATION AND TRAINING GUIDELINES

Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities. A typical way would be:

Education: Equivalent to graduation from an accredited college or university with an Associate’s degree in recreation, gerontology, therapeutics, or a related field.   

Experience: Two (2) years of full-time equivalent experience in the recreation, transportation, education, or a related field. 

Licenses: Must possess and maintain a valid Class “C” California Driver’s License with a satisfactory driving record.  Possession of and ability to maintain a valid first aid certificate. Possession of and ability to maintain a valid CPR certificate. 

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Vision adequate to read and supervise program participants; ability to bend, stoop, or crouch, and have enough physical stamina to lift and carry up to 30 pounds; mobility to move tables and chairs for room setup and to assist in the mobility of a variety of clients. Speak clearly and understandably. 

About the Positions

The Office of Racial Equity is hiring an Assistant to the City Manager position to serve as the Inclusion and Belonging Manager for the City of San José.

The ideal candidate will have significant experience and knowledge in:

• Being a bridge-builder with the San José community and trusted to be a local partner on immigrant and refugee issues;

•                

• Familiarity with legislative process, advocacy towards immigration policy and initiatives;

•                

• Understanding the local context regarding race, gender, and economic disparities and inequities;

•                

• Understanding of racial equity, welcoming and belonging principles;

•                

• Developing programs, policies, or practices that are equitable and are culturally and linguistically appropriate;

•                

• Meeting design, planning and facilitation;

•                

• Writing complex reports and effectively presenting findings;

•                

• Methods and techniques of research, data collection, critical and statistical analysis, report preparation, and presentation development; and

•                

• Supervision of staff and manage workload accordingly.

The Inclusion & Belonging Manager responsibilities include the following:

• Implementation of a Welcoming framework, as well as monitoring, evaluation, and quarterly reporting;

•                

• Form and staff a Welcoming San Jose Advisory Group;

•                

• Prepare council memorandums and presentations;

•                

• Engage in Citywide efforts to advance racial equity;

•                

• Develop and facilitate ongoing partnerships with other agencies and organizations, including Santa Clara County, Rapid Response Network, Refugee and Immigrant Forum, Welcoming America, Cities for Citizenship, local funders, and other networks that prioritize immigrants;

•                

• Serve as a liaison between the City and the immigrant and refugee community;

•                

• Work with the City Manager’s intergovernmental relations team to track local, state, and federal immigration legislation and develop new City policies and programs accordingly;

•                

• Supervise City staff and college interns; and

•                

• Other duties as assigned.

This is a permanent at-will position with the City Manager’s Office reporting to the Director of the Office of Racial Equity. Bilingual in Spanish or Vietnamese is preferable but not required.
