The salary ranges for this classifications:

Student Intern Salary Range - $14.58 - $20.83/hourly (unbenefitted)

The Planning Division in the Department of Planning, Building and Code Enforcement (PBCE) is responsible for both long range planning--which involves guiding the City's future by stewarding Envision San Jose 2040 (the City's General Plan) and preparing Urban Village plans and other area plans--as well as current planning through the review of development proposals. The Planning Division implements policies and plans that determine where and how the City will grow and how that growth will be balanced with the availability of infrastructure and services.

PBCE internship program is designed to offer professional learning opportunities to undergraduate and graduate students who are interested in the urban planning field. Interns may be assigned to specific projects in the sub-disciplines of urban village planning, development review, zoning, urban design, transportation, economic development, housing, sustainability, historic preservation, Geographic Information Systems, and data analytics. Interns will gain exposure to the operations of a planning department and have the opportunity to work on "real life" projects.

Finance Department - The Finance Department has over 100 employees who are dedicated to serve the needs of our customers throughout the City of San Jose. Our mission is to manage, protect, and report on the City of San Jose's financial resources to enhance the City's financial condition for our residents, businesses, and investors. Our services are provided to the organization and community through four separate divisions which include Treasury, Revenue Management, Accounting, and Purchasing. The range of services includes debt management, investments/cash management, payment processing, billing, accounts receivable, delinquent tax/revenue collections, payroll, accounts payable, financial reporting, risk management, and procurement services.

The Housing Department's mission is to strengthen and revitalize our community through housing and neighborhood investment. Since the Housing Department was established in 1987, the City has been a leader in affordable housing , creating more than 21,000 new housing opportunities for San José residents.
A major function of the Housing Department is its work as a funder. The Department utilizes numerous financing vehicles to bring new affordable housing to fruition and rehabilitate older affordable housing. The Department also funds grants for nonprofits to develop and provide social services, homeless response programs, and community infrastructure. Additional grants support Fair Housing policies, place-based neighborhood efforts, and meal programs for low-income seniors.

The position of Administrative Analyst is a fully qualified journey-level professional classification. Administrative Analyst is distinguished from Management Analyst in that the Management Analyst has a higher level of managerial, budgetary and program administration responsibility. The current vacancy is in the Information Technology Department; however, the eligibility list established from this recruitment may also be used to fill future Administrative Analyst vacancies in other Departments throughout the City.

This position is assigned in the Administration, Fiscal and Performance Management Division, reporting to the IT Admin, Fiscal and Performance Manager. The incumbent will perform professional analysis, administrative support, and conduct research including statistical analysis of the results.  They will be responsible to assist with budget development and management, track and oversee the purchasing process, and manage the department's equipment replacement schedules as well as miscellaneous other management duties as assigned.

The Parks & Recreation Department supports a vibrant, active quality of life for all ages, abilities, and interests of the Santa Clara community through excellent parks and recreational facilities, community services, programs, and events. The Parks Division provides planning, development, operation, maintenance, and rehabilitation of City parks and open spaces. The Recreation Division provides classes and programs for all ages and abilities. The Cemetery Division maintains 33,000 internment sites in a peaceful public park.
 
The Position: 
An incumbent in this classification is responsible for the safe operation of an assigned swimming pool, including supervising pool personnel, overseeing conduct of pool events, ensuring  collection and security of revenue, and attendant record keeping.  Candidates must be able to serve a variety of ages, abilities and needs in participants from diverse backgrounds with tact and professionalism.
 
As an as-needed employee, this is an "at-will" position and there is no guarantee of hours. Hours are limited to 999 in a fiscal year or 960 hours in a fiscal year for retired CalPERS annuitants.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Minimum Requirements
• Education equivalent to completion of the eleventh grade; and
• Three (3) years of experience in swimming pool management, swimming instruction, lifeguarding, or related activity; and
• Must be at least 17 years of age at time of application

Possible Substitution
• One (1) year of experience in lifeguarding and/or swimming instruction with the City of Santa Clara may be substituted for the required three (3) years of experience.

LICENSES AND/OR CERTIFICATES
Possession of the following certificates is required:
• A valid American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor certificate or Completion of City of Santa Clara Learn to Swim Instruction Program; and
• A valid American Red Cross Lifeguard certificate; and
• In accordance with State of California law, a valid California Work Permit is required at time of appointment for candidates under the age of 18 who have not graduated from high school or been awarded a certificate of proficiency

 The Assistant City Clerk’s Office/City Manager’s Office is recruiting to fill a Deputy City Clerk. The Assistant City Clerk’s Office is organized under the City Clerk’s Office.  The Office of the Assistant City Clerk processes the agendas for and attends all meetings of the Council and Authorities Concurrent and Stadium Authority meetings, maintains accurate and up-to-date records of the proceedings of those meetings and makes those records open for public inspection. The Office of the Assistant City Clerk processes and maintains copies of City contracts, ordinances, resolutions and other official documents. The Office of the Assistant City Clerk manages and compiles City records in accordance with the Records Retention Schedule and in response to Public Records Act requests. The Office of the Assistant City Clerk administers campaign and disclosure laws, the Campaign Finance Ordinance, Regulation of Lobbying Activities program and the Calendars of Certain City Officials program.  The Position: 
 The Deputy City Clerk will report to the Assistant City Clerk and perform highly complex administrative and analytical work. This position will assist the Assistant City Clerk in the administration of the City Clerk's Office. The incumbent will assist in developing, implementing and coordinating projects, programs and procedures. This position is responsible for assisting with Public Record Act (PRA) requests and this position will also support projects and programs within the City Manager’s Office. Incumbents in this position will have considerable independence in making judgment related to their assignments and must handle situations with great sensitivity, tact and diplomacy. May supervise or act as lead worker to staff involved in management activities.  
 
As a member of the City's unclassified service, this is an "at-will" position. The incumbent serves at the discretion of the City Manager.

Under direct supervision of the Pool Supervisor, The Lifeguard has the responsibility to enforce the safety standards, rules, and regulations of the City’s Pool program; to rescue swimmers in distress and administer First Aid and CPR when it is needed; This position includes ensuring the safety of all pool patrons, be alert of all activities in and around the pool while on duty and to assist with general maintenance and cleanup activities and performs related work as required.  Work is performed in a swimming facility environment, with frequent contact with City staff and the public.  Multiple Lifeguard positions are available.

Under the general direction of the Deputy Director of Recreation and Community Engagement, the Pool Supervisor oversees the day-to-day operations, maintenance, and administration of the aquatic facility. Responsibilities include but are not limited to enforcing policies and procedures which ensure the efficient and effective operation of pool facilities, including personnel management and training. Duties involve all swimming pool operations, including first aid, rotations, scheduling for Staff, public relations, and light janitorial duties. Collect entrance fees, authorization forms, and logs as required. Provide Lifeguard services when needed.

SWIM INSTRUCTOR/LIFEGUARD

$17.50 to $19.29 per hour

Summary Description

Under the direction of the Pool Manager, organizes and instructs swim classes, maintains records and documentation involved with instruction classes, monitors swimmers in the pool area, enforcing pool rules and regulations, preventing accidents and rescuing swimmers in distress during public swim sessions. This is an at-will, intermittent, part-time, hourly position without City-paid benefits.  Some evening and weekend work may be required.

Representative Duties

The following duties are typical for this classification. Incumbents may not perform all of the listed duties and/or may be required to perform additional or different duties from those set forth below to address business needs and changing business practices.

1. Conduct all levels of swim instruction and water safety lessons for participants from ages six months to adult.
2. Assist in curriculum instruction planning and pre-registration program to assess participants’ ability levels.
3. Patrol and monitor aquatics facility, watch for accidents and hazards in the pool areas; enforce rules.
4. Responsible for following accepted lifesaving practices and standards including the administering of cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), O2 and First Aid as needed.
5. Assist with facility operations, aquatics competitions and special events throughout the year, including setup and cleanup.
6. Assist with desk reception, telephone support and related customer service activities; accepts registrations, collect fees and process receipts on a City computer.
7. Responsible for meeting all program goals and objectives.
8. Complete accurate reports and documentation of accidents and incidents in pool and pool area.
9. Attend scheduled staff meetings.
10. Assist with routine pool cleaning and maintenance as needed.
11. Responsible for maintaining a safe and clean swimming pool environment.
12. Responsible for maintaining personal fitness sufficient to perform the required duties.
13. Perform other position-related duties designated by the Pool Manager.

QUALIFICATIONS

The following generally describes the knowledge and ability required to enter the job and/or be learned within a short period of time in order to successfully perform the assigned duties.

Minimum Requirement:

Work Permit may be required if under the age of 18

Possess current and valid certificates from American Red Cross in First Aid, CPR for the Professional Rescuer and Lifeguard Training which must be maintained throughout employment.

Prior experience working with age appropriate groups desirable.

Knowledge of:

Principles and practices of lifeguarding and water safety.

Effective lifesaving techniques.

Advanced and basic swimming strokes, methods and procedures of swimming pool operations.

Effective teaching techniques and practices

Ability to:

Maintain a flexible work schedule, which may include evenings, weekdays, weekends and holidays.

Act quickly, calmly and appropriately in emergency situations; perform lifesaving and rescue activities, including administering CPR, O2 and First Aid.

Convey and instruct the curriculum skills outlined in the aquatics program to children and adults.

Apply functional reasoning in performing semi-routine duties involving standardized work with some choice of action.

Exercise judgement, decisiveness and creativity required in situations involving a variety of pre-defined duties subject to frequent change.

Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing with internal and external customers and staff.

Learn pertinent City rules, policies, ordinances and program requirements.

Maintain timely and accurate reports pertinent to the aquatics program.

Learn basic pool chemistry.

Understand and carry out oral and written directions.

Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted during the course of work.

Education and Experience Guidelines - Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:

Education/Training:

Demonstrated swimming skills that meet the American Red Cross guidelines for aquatics program personnel.

Experience:

Ability to read and write at a level necessary for acceptable job performance, including the ability to follow and to interpret written instructions and to perform basic arithmetic.

Prior experience working with age-appropriate groups preferred.

License or Certificate:

Possession of a valid ID.

Possession of valid certificates from American Red Cross in Lifeguard Training, CPR for the Professional Rescuer, and First Aid; Water Safety Instructor certificate is desirable.

Environment: Work is performed primarily in a wet environment that will cause exposure to light chemical substances, such as chlorine.  One may be required to rescue swimmers in distress and/or demonstrate beginning through advanced swim strokes. All work activities are performed in a public swimming facility.

Physical: Primary functions require sufficient physical ability and mobility to work in a public swimming facility; may be required to rescue swimmers in distress and/or demonstrate beginning through advanced swim strokes; to stand or sit for prolonged periods of time; to regularly stoop, bend, kneel, crouch, reach, and twist; to lift, carry, push, and/or pull light to moderate amounts of weight (up to 50 pounds); ability to demonstrate in the water, all of the swimming skills to be taught, ability to lift light equipment used in teaching; and to verbally communicate to exchange information with an appropriate audible voice.

Vision: See in the normal visual range with or without correction.

Hearing: Hear in the normal audio range with or without correction.
