Work Environment:  This position is part of the Land and Facilities Services Department assigned to a primary field office and will visit other Midpen field sites. Education and Experience:  Any combination of training and experience that would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required qualifications would be:   

 

Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth (12th) grade supplemented by college-level coursework in park maintenance, resource management, or a related field and three (3) years of experience in construction, maintenance, and/or repair of parks, open spaces, and/or related facilities, and/or resource management.

 

Licenses & Certifications Required:    

• Possession of a valid California Class C Driver’s License.
• Possession of, or ability to obtain, Basic First Aid and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification within six (6) months of employment.
• Depending on assignment, possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid California Class A Driver’s License and required endorsements within the probationary period.
• Depending on assignment, possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid Grade I Water Treatment Operator Certificate and Grade I Water Distribution Operator Certificate issued by the California Department of Public Health (CDPH).
• Depending on assignment, possession of, or ability to obtain, a California Qualified Applicators Certificate with Landscape Maintenance (Category B) for pesticide application within (12) months of employment.

THE DEPARTMENT         

The Parks and Recreation Department is the third largest department in the City and is organized by program area, with each program administered by a supervisor, coordinator, or specialist. The department is comprised of the Recreation, Parks, and Facilities divisions. The Parks and Recreation Department mission is to provide opportunities for physical, cultural and social well being; protect and enhance the physical environment; and ensure the effective and efficient use of public facilities and open space. The Parks Division creates and maintains parks and open spaces that are safe, clean, and sustainable while engaging the public with educational opportunities about South San Francisco's outdoor resources.

San Mateo County Parks is currently seeking a full-time extra help Bilingual Community Engagement Intern II.
 

This position would be based out of Flood and Friendship County Parks and primarily working with the communities surrounding these parks. 

 

Friendship County Park is located in North Fair Oaks, an unincorporated area of Redwood City. Through community collaboration, the small urban park was developed to provide outdoor recreation and space to promote community gardening. The park is situated on San Francisco Public Utility Commission land and is managed by the San Mateo County Parks Department. Less than an acre in size, the park features 30 community garden planters, a playground, picnic tables and more. Staff from San Mateo County Health’s Nutrition, Education and Obesity Program provide nutritional education sessions for gardeners and families. Plot use is through an agreement with San Mateo County Parks and requires regular participation in meetings and clean-up days. 

 

Flood County Park is a 21 acre park located in Menlo Park. It is primarily used as a location for family and group picnicking, playground use, and walking by the local community. The park is currently undergoing a planning process to renovate the facilities and encourage use by new sections of the local communities. 

 

An intern at these locations would work on improving the interpretive elements of the park and provide programming and outreach opportunities for the local communities.

 

The Community Engagement intern will report to Flood Park and be able to drive to Friendship Park and other park locations as needed. The intern will be supervised by the Interpretive Division Park Staff. The position will be approximately 60% indoor, desk work/classroom programs and 40% outdoor, event/program work.

Examples Of Duties

A Bilingual Community Engagement Intern would be responsible for:

• Management of Friendship Park Community Garden, including but not limited to:

  • Management of garden plot availability and agreements

  • Primary point of contact for Community Garden participants; maintaining regular communications by County phone, text, and email

  • Work alongside gardeners to identify and address any needs or challenges and maintain garden

  • Lead and facilitate regular on-site educational opportunities for gardeners with staff from San Mateo County Health, Office of Sustainability, and community partners

  • Manage on-site garden tools and supplies; identify additional supplies that may be required

• Community Program Coordination and Outreach, including but not limited to: 

  • Coordinating and leading programs with Community Based Organizations and Partner Organizations within the community near Friendship and Flood Parks (i.e. Libraries, Schools)

  • Leading interpretive programs for the general public at Friendship and Flood Parks 

  • Tabling at local community events, such as Farmer’s Markets

 

Qualifications

The ideal candidate will: 

• Have strong interpersonal skills and possess the ability to effectively communicate in English and Spanish with diverse community members and San Mateo County staff to support gardeners. 

• Be an enthusiastic, outgoing, positive, and energetic person who can work collaboratively or independently with little to no supervision. 

• Have the ability to learn new skills, the willingness to be flexible, and follow directions. 

Qualifications:

• Must be at least 18 years old

• Bilingual in Spanish required

• Experience in food growing and garden management desired

• Knowledge of and ability to teach gardening concepts desired

• Ability to engage with individuals of many demographics and histories – youth, seniors, immigrants, economically diverse

• Strong planning and organizational skills with ability to plan events and organize participants and volunteers

• Must have a valid California Driver’s License

Due to the pandemic, modifications will be made to the programs to ensure the safety of visitors and staff. COVID-19 precautions in accordance with state and county guidelines will be in place.

 

This is a full-time position with flexible and negotiable hours requiring weekend work. 

 

NOTE: This is an extra-help, at-will assignment, paid on an hourly basis. Some extra help positions are eligible for benefits under the Affordable Care Act. Extra help employees are not guaranteed permanent status at the end of the assignment.

THE POSITION

The City of Pacifica is a beautiful coastal community, just south of San Francisco. Currently, the City Manager’s Office has an opening for a customer service oriented, human resources professional to join our team as the Human Resources Manager.

 

THE POSITION

The Human Resources Manager, an at-will position, under general direction of the Assistant City Manager, recommends, develops, implements and evaluates goals, objectives, policies and procedures related to assigned human resource program functions, such as benefits, classification and compensation, recruitment and selection, among others. Physical Demands

This position is seasonal with an assigned 10-hour shift on Fridays and optional 10-hour shifts on Saturday, Sunday, or Monday as needed.  This position will terminate at or before 900 hours and is intended to run concurrently with the Background Investigation and Hiring process for Ranger Trainee, for Seasonal Ranger Assistants who communicate an interest in doing so within the introductory period of the season. Must be available to work at various locations.

 

Public Contact

As public parklands, the majority of MRCA properties are open to the general public during operating hours. This position will have contact with members of the public in public areas such as parking lots and shared public/office restrooms, and during public meetings.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience

THE POSITION

To perform a variety of skilled and semiskilled horticulture tasks in the construction, maintenance and repair of parks, pools, recreation, and cemetery facilities and buildings.  The purpose of this recruitment is to hire multiple temporary/part-time positions.  Candidates who do not currently meet the minimum qualifications for the Park Maintenance Worker I position may be considered for an Intern position instead.

Temporary/part-time employees work no more than 130 hours per month and 960 hours per fiscal year.

 

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Performing general grounds cleaning, including emptying trash receptacles, mopping, sweeping, and raking City park and recreation sites as needed. Water, mow, cultivate, prune, weed, renovate, and fertilize grass, plants, trees, flowers, and shrubs. Operate power mowers, chain saws, rototillers, aerators, hedgers, spreaders, front-end loader, edgers, air compressors, and other equipment. Utilize proper safety precautions related to all performed work. Drive vehicles and equipment as required. Prepare and maintain athletic fields and related facilities, swimming pools, and cemetery/interment operations.  Regular and consistent attendance.

 

OTHER JOB FUNCTIONS

Install, maintain and replace playground equipment and fences; assemble tables, benches and bleachers. Works as a member of the City pest control crew spraying various fertilizers, herbicides, pesticides, and other related chemicals in City park and recreation areas. Respond to inquiries from the general public. Install, maintain and repair irrigation systems. Assist in setting up community services and special events. Maintain, repair and replace plumbing systems and fixtures such as light switches, motors, wall receptacles, conduits, faucets, drinking fountains, water heaters, water closet, urinals, water regulators and pressure valves.  Work cooperatively with others. Work any shift including weekends and holidays. Perform related duties as assigned.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

Park Maintenance Worker I

Education:  High School Diploma or equivalent.

Experience:  Six (6) months of experience in the care and maintenance of landscapes or facilities.

License and Certificate:  Required upon hire, possession of a valid California Driver’s License

 

THE ABILITY TO SPEAK AND UNDERSTAND SPANISH IS A DESIRABLE QUALIFICATION

WORK HOURS

Work hours vary by assignment and may be required to work evenings, weekends and/or holidays.  Position typically works 25-30 hours per week.

$21.96 - $28.03 per hour

Intern
$16.50 - $20.50 per hour

The Department

The Parks and Recreation Department is the third largest department in the City and is organized by program area, with each program administered by a supervisor, coordinator, or specialist. The department is comprised of the Recreation, Parks, and Facilities divisions. The Parks and Recreation Department mission is to provide opportunities for physical, cultural and social well being; protect and enhance the physical environment; and ensure the effective and efficient use of public facilities and open space.

The Position 

Under direct supervision of the Natural Resources Specialist and general supervision of the Parks Supervisor and/or Parks Program Manager, the Natural Resources Aide performs a variety of tasks and maintenance activities, including the removal of invasive plants, installation of native plants, trail repair, erosion control, and other related duties as assigned.

This entry-level classification will perform maintenance and labor tasks in support of habitat management and restoration activities under the Sign Hill Habitat Restoration Project. Work may be performed independently or as a member of a crew. Depending upon assignment, work is performed under close to general supervision. Work is reviewed while in progress and by the results achieved. Incumbents may provide limited work direction to temporary or volunteer workers.
