As key members of the San Mateo County Sheriff's Office Records Bureau, individuals in this position play a crucial role in providing routine, to complex, records and administrative support to various County offices, the public, sworn personnel, and allied law enforcement agencies. Technicians handle confidential information and ensure that information is disseminated in accordance with legal requirements. To succeed in this role, incumbents must possess strong skills in attentiveness to detail, dependability, time-management, organization, reading, critical-thinking, multi-tasking, typing, word processing, filing, and other administrative duties.

Sheriff’s Criminal Records Technician are assigned to any of the three following shifts:
 

Day Shift Technicians: Day Shift is responsible for a significant amount of public contact whether in-person, over the phone, or via email. Day Shift is largely responsible for maintaining, processing, and auditing warrant entries and search and seizure orders, in addition to other duties.

 

Swing Shift Technicians: Swings Shift shares an overlap with Day Shift in responsibility with assisting the public, whether in-person, over the phone, or via email. Swing Shift is mainly responsible for maintaining, processing, and auditing restraining/protective orders filed within our county court, in addition to other duties.

 

Night Shift Technicians: Night Shift interacts mostly with other law enforcement agencies, as well as some public contact either via phone or email. Night Shift is mainly in charge of maintaining, processing, and auditing citations and in-custody court packets for arraignment the following business day, in addition to other duties.

 

All 3 Shifts: Technicians in all shifts are assigned to monitor a teletype station, fax machine, and email inbox 24/7 for reviewing and processing requests through these channels in a timely manner, utilizing a variety of different law enforcement systems. In addition, they handle various administrative duties related to obtaining and compiling data from each of these systems based on the specific request.

Additionally, the ideal candidate will possess the following:
 

Records Management Proficiency. Familiarity with law enforcement records management systems, particularly RIMS, is a plus.

 

Law Enforcement Administrative Support: Provide efficient office or administrative support within a law enforcement or criminal justice setting, demonstrating a keen understanding of the specific requirements and nuances of the law enforcement is highly preferred.

 

Fluency in Spanish. Demonstrated proficiency in speaking, reading, and writing in Spanish is preferred but not required.

 
Work Locations and Available Shifts:
 

Work Locations: The San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office Records Bureau headquarters is located at the Hall of Justice in Redwood City, CA – we also have substations in San Carlos, Half Moon Bay, and Millbrae that we have assigned technicians to work at.

 

Shift Expectations: Selected candidates are expected to work evenings, nights, weekends, holidays and/or other shift work depending on needs of the office.

 

Shift Availability: There are 3 shifts (Days, Swings, and Nights) and we are currently working on a 4-10 Schedule (4 days, 10-hours shifts) split between the days of Sun-Weds and Weds-Sat. Alternative work hour schedules are available (i.e., 9/80 schedule).

 
Other Requirements:
 

Background Check: Selected candidates must successfully pass a detailed background and/or criminal history review conducted by the Sheriff’s Office. Felony and misdemeanor convictions may be disqualifying depending on type, number, severity, and recency. 

 

Uniforms: Hired candidates are required to wear a designated uniform specified to the department while on duty.

Qualifications

Education and Experience: Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to qualify is:
 

Sheriff's Criminal Records Technician I ($27.97-$34.95 hourly):  One year of general clerical or office assistant experience.

Sheriff's Criminal Records Technician II ($29.59-$37.01 hourly):   One year of experience in the maintenance of various law enforcement records.

  
Knowledge of: Policies and procedures related to law enforcement records maintenance activities; legal documents, forms and terminology; office practices and procedures, including filing and the operation of standard office equipment; business data processing principles and the use of word processing and personal computing equipment; business letter writing and the standard format for typed materials; correct English usage, including spelling, grammar and punctuation; business arithmetic, including percentages and decimals; and record keeping principles and practices.
 
Skill/Ability to: Read and understand law enforcement documents and extract relevant information; perform detailed Sheriff's records support work accurately; use initiative and sound independent judgment within established guidelines; compose routine correspondence from brief instructions; operate standard equipment including a computer; operate non-standard office equipment, including document imaging system and mug shot and photo line-up machine; deal tactfully and effectively with a variety of individuals in person and over the phone, some of whom might be hostile or irate; organize and maintain accurate files and records; make accurate arithmetic calculations, and understand and carry out oral and written directions.

Open & Promotional. Anyone may apply. Current County of San Mateo and County of San Mateo Superior Court of California employees with at least six months (1040 hours) of continuous service in a classified regular, probationary, extra-help/limited term positions prior to the final filing date will receive five points added to their final passing score on this examination.

The examination process will consist of an application screening (weight: Pass/Fail) based on the candidates' application and responses to the supplemental questions. Candidates who pass the application screening will be invited to a panel interview which may include a pre-interview exercise (weight: 100%). Depending on the number of applicants, an application appraisal of education and experience may be used in place of other examinations or further evaluation of work experience may be conducted to group applicants by level of qualification. All applicants who meet the minimum qualifications are not guaranteed advancement through any subsequent phase of the examination. All examinations will be given in San Mateo County, California and applicants must participate at their own expense.

San Mateo County Parks is currently seeking a full-time extra help Bilingual Community Engagement Intern II.
 

This position would be based out of Flood and Friendship County Parks and primarily working with the communities surrounding these parks. 

 

Friendship County Park is located in North Fair Oaks, an unincorporated area of Redwood City. Through community collaboration, the small urban park was developed to provide outdoor recreation and space to promote community gardening. The park is situated on San Francisco Public Utility Commission land and is managed by the San Mateo County Parks Department. Less than an acre in size, the park features 30 community garden planters, a playground, picnic tables and more. Staff from San Mateo County Health’s Nutrition, Education and Obesity Program provide nutritional education sessions for gardeners and families. Plot use is through an agreement with San Mateo County Parks and requires regular participation in meetings and clean-up days. 

 

Flood County Park is a 21 acre park located in Menlo Park. It is primarily used as a location for family and group picnicking, playground use, and walking by the local community. The park is currently undergoing a planning process to renovate the facilities and encourage use by new sections of the local communities. 

 

An intern at these locations would work on improving the interpretive elements of the park and provide programming and outreach opportunities for the local communities.

 

The Community Engagement intern will report to Flood Park and be able to drive to Friendship Park and other park locations as needed. The intern will be supervised by the Interpretive Division Park Staff. The position will be approximately 60% indoor, desk work/classroom programs and 40% outdoor, event/program work.

Examples Of Duties

A Bilingual Community Engagement Intern would be responsible for:

• Management of Friendship Park Community Garden, including but not limited to:

  • Management of garden plot availability and agreements

  • Primary point of contact for Community Garden participants; maintaining regular communications by County phone, text, and email

  • Work alongside gardeners to identify and address any needs or challenges and maintain garden

  • Lead and facilitate regular on-site educational opportunities for gardeners with staff from San Mateo County Health, Office of Sustainability, and community partners

  • Manage on-site garden tools and supplies; identify additional supplies that may be required

• Community Program Coordination and Outreach, including but not limited to: 

  • Coordinating and leading programs with Community Based Organizations and Partner Organizations within the community near Friendship and Flood Parks (i.e. Libraries, Schools)

  • Leading interpretive programs for the general public at Friendship and Flood Parks 

  • Tabling at local community events, such as Farmer’s Markets

 

Qualifications

The ideal candidate will: 

• Have strong interpersonal skills and possess the ability to effectively communicate in English and Spanish with diverse community members and San Mateo County staff to support gardeners. 

• Be an enthusiastic, outgoing, positive, and energetic person who can work collaboratively or independently with little to no supervision. 

• Have the ability to learn new skills, the willingness to be flexible, and follow directions. 

Qualifications:

• Must be at least 18 years old

• Bilingual in Spanish required

• Experience in food growing and garden management desired

• Knowledge of and ability to teach gardening concepts desired

• Ability to engage with individuals of many demographics and histories – youth, seniors, immigrants, economically diverse

• Strong planning and organizational skills with ability to plan events and organize participants and volunteers

• Must have a valid California Driver’s License

Due to the pandemic, modifications will be made to the programs to ensure the safety of visitors and staff. COVID-19 precautions in accordance with state and county guidelines will be in place.

 

This is a full-time position with flexible and negotiable hours requiring weekend work. 

 

NOTE: This is an extra-help, at-will assignment, paid on an hourly basis. Some extra help positions are eligible for benefits under the Affordable Care Act. Extra help employees are not guaranteed permanent status at the end of the assignment.

Sergeants are first-line supervisors responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operations and performance of personnel who work in a variety of department units including patrol, investigations, special events, records, parking and traffic, and administration.  Supervisory duties include carrying out and overseeing general law enforcement / public safety functions; setting goals and objectives for the unit; contributing to the fulfillment of objectives; motivating and developing personnel; ensuring that personnel meet performance expectations; providing documentation of performance; and implementing strategies that enhance department operations.  Sergeants are expected to work closely and collaboratively with their peers within the department, to effectively coordinate the day-to-day operations of the various units as well as the department. 

A Stanford Department of Public Safety Sergeant must maintain proficiency and exercise the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to perform basic law enforcement functions as well as directly supervise personnel assigned to his/her work group.  The knowledge base and skills required for this position include, but are not limited to: an understanding of pertinent federal, state, and local laws, codes and regulations; rules of evidence pertaining to search and seizure and preservation of evidence; techniques and applications of self-defense and proper use of force; use, operation, and maintenance of police equipment, vehicles and tools; department policies and procedures; and institutional policies and procedures (such as the Administrative Guide). 

In addition to their supervisory responsibilities, Sergeants are expected to perform the same basic job duties as line personnel, including, but not limited to: investigating crimes and arresting individuals; issuing citations; and participating in community outreach activities.  Sergeants must balance their administrative responsibilities with in-field supervision, spending considerable time working in the field and directly with the staff in their assigned unit. 
SUDPS personnel are considered “essential” or “required” University personnel and shall respond to campus when directed to do so, even with little advanced notice.  Sergeants are integral to the department’s overall emergency response efforts.  Absent a higher ranking sworn SUDPS member, the responsibility to assure shift operational efficiency shall be the primary responsibility of a Sergeant.
Work is performed primarily on-site; the position is subject to shift work including day, swing, and night shifts.

DEFINITION

Manages the Town's transportation program, including engineering, planning, budgeting, construction and maintenance of the Town's traffic network and transportation infrastructure system and a team of professional personnel.  Oversees multi-modal transportation projects, traffic safety and congestion reduction programs, traffic studies, and initiatives.  Provides supervision to assigned staff.  Maintains effective working relationships with Town employees, community members, state and county agencies, and appropriate others in support of assigned duties.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED

Receives direction from the Development Services Director.  General supervision is exercised over professional staff. 

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES

Essential duties may include, but are not limited to the following:

• Develops and directs the implementation of goals, objectives, policies, procedures and work standards for assigned division; interprets and complies with all applicable local, state and federal regulations (e.g. MUTCD, etc.).
• Develops and monitors the division’s budget; oversees financial well-being of the division by analyzing cost effectiveness and directing cost control activities.
• Oversees the budgeting, planning, engineering, and construction of Town’s transportation capital improvement projects.
• Oversees and directs workflow for multiple programs and functions (e.g. Neighborhood Traffic Management Program, etc.). 
• Evaluates, analyzes, prepares, reviews, and submits routine and specialized technical reports.
• Coordinate interdepartmental responses to transportation and traffic projects; work closely with engineering, maintenance, planning, and police staff on a wide-range of municipal transportation and traffic issues.
• Oversees transportation review of the traffic and transportation requirements for land development projects; prepare scope of work for traffic impact studies; reviews traffic impact studies, makes comments and recommendation for approval.  
• Oversees the operation and maintenance of the Town’s traffic, bicycle and pedestrian signals and related infrastructure, including inspections, troubleshooting, and contracting for major repairs.
• Review accident reports and prepare collision diagrams. 
• Review and comment on new traffic signal plans and assist with field inspection of new traffic signals; monitor traffic signal operations and make proactive field adjustments and enhancements. 
• Apply highway design standards, criteria, and policies; utilize accident and traffic volume records and traffic control device inventory to produce a complete and creative solution to traffic problems.
• Apply for and secure funds for targeted transportation grants.
• Makes presentations to Town Council, boards, commissions, and citizen groups.
• Staff liaison to a number of multi-agency Joint Powers Authorities and Regional Committees to ensure multi-agency collaboration on regional issues and programs are met and that multi-agency services are being provided efficiently and effectively; collaborates closely with Town Council liaison to the Committee(s), as well as other agencies’ elected officials.
• Coordinates, corresponds and interacts directly with citizens, customers, staff, etc., for transportation engineering services (e.g. safety, traffic calming, sight distance, speed management, active transportation, etc.).
• Respond to citizen inquiries, suggestions, and concerns for safety and/or solutions to unique traffic problems by creatively utilizing acceptable traffic engineering standards.
• Represents the Town before boards, commissions, and committees addressing transportation issues in southwest Contra Costa County
• Performs emergency or disaster-related duties as assigned; and
• Performs other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge of:

• Principles, practices, and techniques of transportation planning and traffic engineering.
• Fundamentals of traffic engineering, including human and vehicular characteristics, intersection and roadway capacity, transportation impact studies, traffic signal operations, intersection design, residential street design and traffic control, on and off‑street parking, traffic control devices; traffic signal operations at isolated intersections and coordinated signal systems, and site planning.
• Recent developments, current literature and sources of information regarding transportation planning and traffic engineering.

Ability to:

• Prepare clear and concise written reports and correspondence.
• Make presentations before the Town Council and other organizations.
• Apply transportation planning and traffic engineering knowledge to specific technical problems.
• Layout and design a wide variety of traffic implementation plans.
• Deal tactfully and effectively with the general public, civic and community groups, public officials and consultants.

EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION

Experience:

Five (5) years of progressive experience in civil engineering, traffic engineering, transportation planning, or closely related field including at least two (2) years of supervisory experience.

Education:

A bachelor’s degree in transportation planning, traffic engineering or closely related field.

LICENSE(S) AND CERTIFICATION(S)

Possession of a valid California State Driver's License, or license in another state with the ability to obtain a California license within 30 days of hire. Registration as a Traffic Engineer is desired but not mandatory.

San Mateo County Health's Public Health Policy & Planning (PHPP) Division has an exciting opportunity for an experienced Veterinarian to work in Animal Control and Licensing as a member of the team.
 
The current vacancy is extra help part time 20-hours per week in the Public Health, Policy and Planning Division. The position is stationed in San Mateo, CA, but will travel/drive throughout the County to perform duties of the position.
 
Scheduling is flexible. Daily reporting hours and days of the week may vary according to the needs of the department. Evening and weekend work may be required based on the needs of the organization. This position is a hybrid of remote work as well as field-based at clinics.
 
The Veterinary Wellness Program provides veterinary services to the pets of the unhoused, those in transitional housing, and very low-income San Mateo County residents who are receiving services from San Mateo County. This position works with San Mateo County Health and cross collaborates with other programs within the County. Technical expertise, as well as knowledge of veterinary public health practices, are preferred.
 
San Mateo County is unique in that most of our homeless shelters allow residents to bring their pets with them, not just an emotional support or service animal. One of the barriers for homeless people to get into a shelter with their pets is that their pet must be current on their vaccinations. Within 10 days of a new resident moving into a shelter with a pet, the County veterinarian will meet with the owner and their pet to provide a general exam, the necessary vaccinations and flea control. This position will visit various sites throughout the County on a regular basis, providing vaccines, flea control, antibiotics, anti-inflammatories, and general exams. In addition, the Veterinarian will travel to various homeless encampments to provide these services and to offer and encourage spaying and neutering of the pets.
 
When pets need additional care, this position will coordinate with local veterinary clinics we contract with for services. These contracts allow us to provide spay and neuter services, dental services, and many other procedures that the pet owner would not otherwise be able to afford. These vital veterinary services keep pets from being relinquished to animal shelters and provides peace of mind for the pet owner. In addition, our veterinary program partners with our Street Medicine Program to provide health care services to the pet owners, which advances San Mateo County’s One Health Concept.
 
This Veterinarian position will be providing technical/subject matter expertise on issues relating to the spread of zoonotic, epizootic, and exotic diseases, as well as consulting on cases of rabies in domestic and wild animals. The position will also act as a liaison between the veterinary community, Veterinary Public Health, California Department of Public Health, and residents of the County.
 
Duties will include, but are not limited to, the following:

• Provide lead direction to staff responsible for following prescribed treatment and maintaining treatment records for animals treated.
• Ensure that the highest level of service and care are provided and that changes in animals’ conditions are recorded and properly addressed.
• Examine and evaluate animals, and perform veterinary medical treatments, including vaccinations and preventative treatment as appropriate. 
• Coordinate with local veterinarians and clinic/shelter professionals to arrange spay and neuter surgeries and medical procedures.
• Arrange for care at a contracted veterinary hospital for severely injured, sick or diseased animals and provides full orders for care.
• Establishes and maintains medical records and drug use logs to standards of veterinary practices.
• Ensure that records are in order and complete and prepare written reports as needed; ensures that all State and Federal laws, regulations, accepted standards, are adhered to. 
• Maintain up-to-date knowledge of shelter animal health protocols, surgical procedures, and companion animal health issues.
• Build and maintain effective relationships with the staff, community, local veterinarians, State Veterinarian. 
• Assist in the monitoring of inventory and ordering of medical supplies and pharmaceuticals.
• Serve as technical/subject matter expert to answer questions from the County Health Officer, medical community and the general public regarding issues related to/involving animals—including but not limited to researching, recommending, implementing and/or maintaining measures to prevent the spread of zoonotic diseases, epizootic diseases, exotic diseases and disease outbreaks. 
• Serve as a consultant in suspect cases of rabies in domestic and wild animals as well as complex issues deriving from animal bites.
• Review pertinent legislation, regulations, and policies to provide recommendations, especially with regards to vaccination of domestic animals, rabies vaccine exemptions, quarantine/euthanasia of animals exposed to rabies.
• Disseminate relevant information to the local veterinary community as well as to residents of the county. 
• Assist with emergencies and disaster services.
• Perform related duties as assigned.

 
Ideal candidate will possess:
•       Experience working one – two years as a Veterinarian.

• Experience in diagnosing and treating disease, illness, and injuries of dogs, cats, rabbits, and other animals. 
• Ability to test animals for disease and administer vaccines.
• Ability to evaluate condition and coordinate maintenance of equipment and supplies.
• Ability to help ensure the safe storage, access, and use of medications.
• Ability to develop and provide guidance on sanitary protocols, feeding, preventative medicine, and general care to promote the health of all animals.
• Ability to research and prepare medical reports for guidance of management upon request.
• Ability to write grant proposals for funding.
• Ability to communicate effectively with all levels of staff and residents of the community.
• Attend meetings and other meetings as requested or required.
• Obtain continuing education as required and be committed to staying up-to-date technically with industry best practices and applying learned knowledge.
• Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with partner and contract providers.
• Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.

This is an extra-help, at-will assignment, paid on an hourly basis. Extra-help hours are dependent on the business needs of the department and therefore work hours may vary from week to week. Extra help employees shall not exceed 1,040 hours of work per fiscal year. Some extra help positions are eligible for benefits under the Affordable Care Act. Extra help employees are not guaranteed permanent status at the end of the assignment.
