Work Environment:  This position is part of the Land and Facilities Services Department assigned to a primary field office and will visit other Midpen field sites. Education and Experience:  Any combination of training and experience that would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required qualifications would be:   

 

Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth (12th) grade supplemented by college-level coursework in park maintenance, resource management, or a related field and three (3) years of experience in construction, maintenance, and/or repair of parks, open spaces, and/or related facilities, and/or resource management.

 

Licenses & Certifications Required:    

• Possession of a valid California Class C Driver’s License.
• Possession of, or ability to obtain, Basic First Aid and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification within six (6) months of employment.
• Depending on assignment, possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid California Class A Driver’s License and required endorsements within the probationary period.
• Depending on assignment, possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid Grade I Water Treatment Operator Certificate and Grade I Water Distribution Operator Certificate issued by the California Department of Public Health (CDPH).
• Depending on assignment, possession of, or ability to obtain, a California Qualified Applicators Certificate with Landscape Maintenance (Category B) for pesticide application within (12) months of employment.

THE DEPARTMENT         

The Parks and Recreation Department is the third largest department in the City and is organized by program area, with each program administered by a supervisor, coordinator, or specialist. The department is comprised of the Recreation, Parks, and Facilities divisions. The Parks and Recreation Department mission is to provide opportunities for physical, cultural and social well being; protect and enhance the physical environment; and ensure the effective and efficient use of public facilities and open space. The Parks Division creates and maintains parks and open spaces that are safe, clean, and sustainable while engaging the public with educational opportunities about South San Francisco's outdoor resources.

San Mateo County Parks is currently seeking a full-time extra help Bilingual Community Engagement Intern II.
 

This position would be based out of Flood and Friendship County Parks and primarily working with the communities surrounding these parks. 

 

Friendship County Park is located in North Fair Oaks, an unincorporated area of Redwood City. Through community collaboration, the small urban park was developed to provide outdoor recreation and space to promote community gardening. The park is situated on San Francisco Public Utility Commission land and is managed by the San Mateo County Parks Department. Less than an acre in size, the park features 30 community garden planters, a playground, picnic tables and more. Staff from San Mateo County Health’s Nutrition, Education and Obesity Program provide nutritional education sessions for gardeners and families. Plot use is through an agreement with San Mateo County Parks and requires regular participation in meetings and clean-up days. 

 

Flood County Park is a 21 acre park located in Menlo Park. It is primarily used as a location for family and group picnicking, playground use, and walking by the local community. The park is currently undergoing a planning process to renovate the facilities and encourage use by new sections of the local communities. 

 

An intern at these locations would work on improving the interpretive elements of the park and provide programming and outreach opportunities for the local communities.

 

The Community Engagement intern will report to Flood Park and be able to drive to Friendship Park and other park locations as needed. The intern will be supervised by the Interpretive Division Park Staff. The position will be approximately 60% indoor, desk work/classroom programs and 40% outdoor, event/program work.

Examples Of Duties

A Bilingual Community Engagement Intern would be responsible for:

• Management of Friendship Park Community Garden, including but not limited to:

  • Management of garden plot availability and agreements

  • Primary point of contact for Community Garden participants; maintaining regular communications by County phone, text, and email

  • Work alongside gardeners to identify and address any needs or challenges and maintain garden

  • Lead and facilitate regular on-site educational opportunities for gardeners with staff from San Mateo County Health, Office of Sustainability, and community partners

  • Manage on-site garden tools and supplies; identify additional supplies that may be required

• Community Program Coordination and Outreach, including but not limited to: 

  • Coordinating and leading programs with Community Based Organizations and Partner Organizations within the community near Friendship and Flood Parks (i.e. Libraries, Schools)

  • Leading interpretive programs for the general public at Friendship and Flood Parks 

  • Tabling at local community events, such as Farmer’s Markets

 

Qualifications

The ideal candidate will: 

• Have strong interpersonal skills and possess the ability to effectively communicate in English and Spanish with diverse community members and San Mateo County staff to support gardeners. 

• Be an enthusiastic, outgoing, positive, and energetic person who can work collaboratively or independently with little to no supervision. 

• Have the ability to learn new skills, the willingness to be flexible, and follow directions. 

Qualifications:

• Must be at least 18 years old

• Bilingual in Spanish required

• Experience in food growing and garden management desired

• Knowledge of and ability to teach gardening concepts desired

• Ability to engage with individuals of many demographics and histories – youth, seniors, immigrants, economically diverse

• Strong planning and organizational skills with ability to plan events and organize participants and volunteers

• Must have a valid California Driver’s License

Due to the pandemic, modifications will be made to the programs to ensure the safety of visitors and staff. COVID-19 precautions in accordance with state and county guidelines will be in place.

 

This is a full-time position with flexible and negotiable hours requiring weekend work. 

 

NOTE: This is an extra-help, at-will assignment, paid on an hourly basis. Some extra help positions are eligible for benefits under the Affordable Care Act. Extra help employees are not guaranteed permanent status at the end of the assignment.

Physical Demands

Required Hours and Location

This position is seasonal with an assigned 10-hour shift on Fridays and optional 10-hour shifts on Saturday, Sunday, or Monday as needed.  This position will terminate at or before 900 hours and is intended to run concurrently with the Background Investigation and Hiring process for Ranger Trainee, for Seasonal Ranger Assistants who communicate an interest in doing so within the introductory period of the season. Must be available to work at various locations.

 

Public Contact

As public parklands, the majority of MRCA properties are open to the general public during operating hours. This position will have contact with members of the public in public areas such as parking lots and shared public/office restrooms, and during public meetings.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

The following generally describes the knowledge and ability required to enter the job and/or be learned within a short period of time in order to successfully perform the essential functions. Education and Experience

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Performing general grounds cleaning, including emptying trash receptacles, mopping, sweeping, and raking City park and recreation sites as needed. Water, mow, cultivate, prune, weed, renovate, and fertilize grass, plants, trees, flowers, and shrubs. Operate power mowers, chain saws, rototillers, aerators, hedgers, spreaders, front-end loader, edgers, air compressors, and other equipment. Utilize proper safety precautions related to all performed work. Drive vehicles and equipment as required. Prepare and maintain athletic fields and related facilities, swimming pools, and cemetery/interment operations.  Regular and consistent attendance.

 

OTHER JOB FUNCTIONS

Install, maintain and replace playground equipment and fences; assemble tables, benches and bleachers. Works as a member of the City pest control crew spraying various fertilizers, herbicides, pesticides, and other related chemicals in City park and recreation areas. Respond to inquiries from the general public. Install, maintain and repair irrigation systems. Assist in setting up community services and special events. Maintain, repair and replace plumbing systems and fixtures such as light switches, motors, wall receptacles, conduits, faucets, drinking fountains, water heaters, water closet, urinals, water regulators and pressure valves.  Work cooperatively with others. Work any shift including weekends and holidays. Perform related duties as assigned.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

Park Maintenance Worker I

Education:  High School Diploma or equivalent.

Experience:  Six (6) months of experience in the care and maintenance of landscapes or facilities.

License and Certificate:  Required upon hire, possession of a valid California Driver’s License

FOR ALL POSITIONS.

 

WORK HOURS

The Position

This entry-level classification will perform maintenance and labor tasks in support of habitat management and restoration activities under the Sign Hill Habitat Restoration Project. Work may be performed independently or as a member of a crew. Depending upon assignment, work is performed under close to general supervision. Work is reviewed while in progress and by the results achieved. Incumbents may provide limited work direction to temporary or volunteer workers.

Read Santa Clara’s adult literacy program serves adults who seek to strengthen their basic literacy skills to achieve their goals as family members, workers, community members and lifelong learners.

 

The Position:

The Literacy Technology Assistant helps Read Santa Clara's adult learners gain basic digital literacy skills. The person helps adult learners 1:1 or in small groups learn how to use the literacy program's laptops and iPads as well as how to use literacy software on their own devices. The Literacy Technology Assistant may also be called on to support volunteer tutors or Read Santa Clara staff, as the need arises. The Literacy Technology Assistant is a patient, empathetic individual, who can teach basic technology skills to adults who have little or no digital literacy skills.

 

As an as-needed employee, this is an "at-will" position and there is no guarantee of hours. Hours are limited to 999 in a fiscal year or 960 hours in a fiscal year for retired CalPERS annuitants.

Typical Duties:

• Configure and operate Read Santa Clara's devices.
• Maintain the technology inventory, including keeping track of software subscriptions and licenses.
• Meet one-on-one with adult learners who need help with technology.
• Plan and conduct small group classes for learners on basic technology skills and literacy software.
• Check in and check out RSC devices to adult learners.
• Advise volunteers on how to effectively incorporate technology in literacy instruction and assist them as-needed with the online platform used to turn in monthly tutoring reports
• Write user-friendly instructions/create tutorial videos to help adult learners/tutors use literacy software.
• Record data and provide reports of sessions held with learners and tutors.
• Support Read Santa Clara staff, as needed, on specific literacy projects.

• Adult literacy and/or experience tutoring adults in basic literacy/technology skills
• Windows based operating systems and standard office software.
• How to use laptops/Chromebooks, iPads, smart phones, and copiers/printers.

• Learn about literacy software and the library's electronic resources.
• Teach adults basic technology skills.
• Work independently and prioritize work assignments with minimal supervision.
• Troubleshoot routine technology problems and recognize and report complex problems to literacy staff.

The City of Menlo Park is currently accepting applications for Child Care Teacher I/II.   

These positions are part-time (20 hours a week) and provide a flexible work schedule. We are looking for candidates that enjoy teaching & working with preschool and school aged children. The working hours are Monday through Friday.

Summary:
Under general supervision, plan, conduct, and participate in recreational program activities according to established programs, schedules, and standards, in accordance with District policies and procedures.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: 

• Develop, conduct, and participate in various athletic, craft, social, cultural, and instructional activities
• Prepare facilities for programming, special events, or rental group usage
• Greet visitors, direct participants to the appropriate location, and respond to general inquiries
• Ensure safety of environment and equipment for staff, volunteers, participants, and visitors
• May open or close and secure facilities in compliance with District policies and procedures
• Issue and collect recreation equipment and supplies used by instructors, participants, or visitors
• Supervise special events, field trips, and other group activities

• Coordinate and participate in promotional activities and community events

Minimum Qualifications:
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty* satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skills, and/or ability required:

Education and Experience:
Minimum age of 18 years old with a High School Diploma (or GED). At least 500 hours of experience in recreation with 15 units completed in recreation or a related field preferred, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. 

Certificates and Licenses:

• First Aid & CPR/AED within 90 days of employment with ability to maintain certifications thereafter as a condition of employment.
• Valid California driver’s license with a good driving record and current automobile insurance. For Therapeutics unit^: ability to obtain a commercial driver license within one year of employment (for a 15-passenger van).
• Department of Justice fingerprint clearance.
• Proof of a negative TB skin test.

Ability to communicate effectively in English in both written and oral form. Ability to write routine correspondence using correct spelling and grammar. The City of Foster City is looking for a Parks Maintenance Worker I who is able to demonstrate competency and increasing independence, knowledge and ability in performing routine and special assignments in a variety of maintenance program areas in the Parks Maintenance Division. This position performs routine and standardized tasks and duties. This is a full-time entry-level position. 

The ideal candidate will have knowledge of advance methods, materials, terminology and safe work practices of parks maintenance, construction maintenance equipment and tools, gardening and landscaping, and pesticide application. They will have experience safely operating a variety of tools and equipment and performing physical tasks for long periods of time. The ideal candidate will have the ability to work independently, exercise good judgement, be an active listener able to understand and communicate verbal and written instructions and directions an establish and maintain a cooperative working relationship with others. Ability to respond courteously to public inquiries and effectively interact with a variety or customers is also expected.

Education and Experience
Any combination equivalent to experience and education that could likely provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities. A typical way would be:

Education: Completion of a job or technical training program in maintenance, construction, or grounds keeping or completion of high school or the equivalent.

Experience: One year of full-time experience in general maintenance, construction, or groundskeeping.

Licenses, Certificates, Registration
Licenses:  Possession of a valid California Class "C" and Class "B" Driver's License. Must obtain valid California Class “B” Driver’s License within six months of appointment.

Selection Process
Applications will be reviewed for relevant education, experience, training and other job related qualifications. Based upon a review of employment applications received, a limited number of the qualified applicants will be invited to participate in the examination process.

The process will consist of an Oral Panel Interview (weighted 50%), practical exercise (weighted 50%). An eligibility list will be established from those who pass the examination process with a score of 70% or higher. Current and future vacancies may be filled from this list. The list will remain in effect for at least one year unless exhausted sooner.

The department will invite the most qualified candidates from the eligibility list to a final department interview. The Parks department will make the hiring decision.
