Description

THE POSITION

This is an excellent job opportunity for individuals interested in law enforcement. 

This is a recruitment for the entry-level class of the Police Services Aide series.  Incumbents perform work according to established procedures and routines, although an employee may be required to make decisions involving emergency circumstances.  Detailed instructions are given on assignments and work is reviewed while in progress.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

Operates computers, and other communications equipment; answers a variety of questions from the public and handles a variety of front desk services ; receives and processes phone calls for Police assistance; maintains detailed records of Police phone and radio calls and their disposition; types routine reports and miscellaneous correspondence; processes documents and maintains files in accord with standard procedures; maintains files, receives money, and issues receipts; prepares daily reports and transactions; may assist with animal control duties when needed; fingerprints applicants; assist with property room functions including transporting property to and from court; and performs related work as required.

Also, assist with community engagement events, conducts traffic control and in field equipment delivery, supports patrol staff with equipment maintenance and supply replenishment.

The ideal candidate has a genuine interest in a career in law enforcement.  They will be eager to gain experience through various assignments within the police department. The ability to professionally communicate and interact with the public and city staff is essential.  There is an expectation of honesty and integrity, both on and off duty.  Candidates that strive to continually expand their knowledge and understanding of department procedures will lend to their success.

This is the perfect assignment to provide direct experience in a variety of areas within the police department.

QUALIFICATIONS

Applicants must possess the following minimum qualifications:

Education:

At least a junior level in high school

Other Requirements:

  · A valid CA Driver License with a satisfactory driving record.

  · Interest in law enforcement career strongly desired.

  · Education in Criminal Justice strongly desired. 

Special Requirements:

  · May work irregular duty assignments, and on-call. 

  · Employees in this class must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. 

Benefits

COMPENSATION  

* This is a non-benefited, temporary position. Temporary employees will only work up to 1,000 hours per year.

* May be required to wear a uniform for certain assignments. The Police Services Aide position is eligible to receive a uniform allowance, paid biweekly up to $100 per fiscal year.     

PART-TIME BENEFITS:

  • Sick Leave: After 90 days from an employee’s hire date, the employee is entitled to 5 days (40 hours) sick leave per fiscal year. Sick hours do not roll over to the next year and therefore must be utilized or forfeited annually.


RETIREMENT:

  • Temporary employees will be required to contribute to a Nationwide Deferred Compensation Plan.


TEMPORARY EMPLOYEE STATUS:

  • Employment may be terminated with or without cause or notice, at any time, at the will of the City of Newark, in its sole discretion.
