Office Assistant for Recreation and Community Programs

Office Assistants provide a variety of office support activities to an assigned program or division. Office Assistants are expected to provide professional and courteous customer service at all times; greet and assist program visitors; answer the telephone in a courteous and professional manner; provide accurate information and answer general questions or forward calls to appropriate staff. Office Assistants also are tasked to open and secure assigned facilities; set up, arrange, and take furniture and equipment and ensure set up is in accordance with customer needs and requests for classes, rentals, meetings, and special events; monitor the proper and safe use of City facilities by the general public and ensure adherence to rules and policies; ensure the cleanliness and safety of facilities throughout the day. As experience is gained, assignments become more varied and are performed with greater independence. Candidates must demonstrate proficiency with word processing, data entry and organization, telephone and counter reception, record keeping, verbal and written communication, and customer service.

Currently, the City is preparing to open a brand-new, state-of-the-art multi-service center known as the Belle Haven Community Campus. The County of Yuba is currently recruiting for the position of Public Health Nurse Intern/Public Health Nurse in the Health and Human Services Department. This position provides the full range of public health nursing services including teaching, health assessment, and counseling services in homes, clinics, schools and community centers in connection with the prevention and control of diseases and adverse health conditions. Public Health Nurses are assigned to specific programs such as Maternal, Child and Adolescent Health, California Children’s Services, Child Health and Disability Prevention, Foster Care and communicable disease control. Public Health Nurse Intern: is a recruiting and training level class established to qualify candidates for duties as a PHN in Yuba County Health & Human Services Department. Under close supervision, incumbents learn and perform a variety of public health nursing duties in assigned program areas while pursuing a Public Health Nurse Certification. Upon satisfactory completion of the PHN Certification, the PHN Intern are eligible for promotion to the level of PHN. Incumbents who do not successfully complete the PHN certification as prescribed herein may be released from employment.

Public Health Nurse: is the entry level in this class series. Initially under close supervision, incumbents learn and perform a variety of public health nursing duties in assigned program areas. As experience is gained, assignments become more complex and are performed under more general supervision.

The City of Berkeley is seeking a Senior Public Health Nurse who is passionate about working with community members and partners! In this role, you will take an equity-focused approach to supporting good health for families and individuals across the lifespan.

The Senior Public Health Nurse will provide health consultations and case management in a multidisciplinary team for families facing complex health challenges. In addition to providing consultations and trainings for community based organizations and providers, this position will also lead initiatives to enhance professional development for a team of nurses and support program planning for Public Health Nursing services.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

A typical way of gaining the knowledge, skills and abilities for this position is:
Equivalent to graduation from a four year college or university accredited by the National League for Nursing, with major course work in nursing, and two (2) years of public health nursing experience. 

Other requirements include:

• Possession of a valid California Registered Nurse License

• Possession of a valid California State Public Health Nursing Certificate

• Willing to work evenings or weekends

• Ability to travel to various locations within and outside the City of Berkeley to meet the program needs and to fulfill the job responsibilities. When driving on City business, must maintain a valid California driver's license and a satisfactory driving record. 

Under general supervision, the Neighborhood Preservation Inspector. ensures compliance with applicable sections of the State, Federal, and Municipal Codes, ordinances, and in relevant areas, such as property maintenance, abandoned vehicles, planning, zoning, signs, community nuisance, and related areas.  This is a classification in the Economic and Community Development Department.

CLASS CHARACTERISITICS:

The Neighborhood Preservation Inspector is the full journey-level classification.  This position requires experience in both Municipal and Zoning Codes and Regulations. Employees at this level are expected to work with property owners independently and to coordinate City resources to solve neighborhood issues.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES (illustrative only):

• Work closely with homeowners and businesses to achieve compliance.
• Interpret ordinances, policies and procedures, and code enforcement concepts.
• Prepare reports and recommendations on code enforcement matters, and gain voluntary compliance.

Under the supervision of the Building/Code Compliance Coordinator and the Chief Building Official/Senior Plans Examiner, the Building/Code Compliance Inspector performs work in the areas of building, electrical, mechanical, plumbing, energy, green, zoning, and residential fire protection inspections; various aspects of code enforcement; and other duties as assigned.

CLASS CHARACTERISTICS

This is the journey-level, professional class that is expected to read plans, make code interpretations, have comprehensive knowledge of construction materials and techniques, and be able to perform field inspections (both Building and Code Enforcement) on their own.

This position is distinguished from the next higher class of Senior Building/Code Compliance Inspector by the latter providing training, technical advice, and lead assistance to incumbent inspectors. The Building/Code Compliance Inspector is further distinguished from the lower level of Building/Code Compliance Trainee in that the latter is the entry-level class, and is in training, learning the full scope of the assigned duties and responsibilities.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES (illustrative only):

• Inspecting residential, commercial, and industrial occupancies for compliance with building, electrical, mechanical, plumbing, energy, green, zoning and fire protection codes and standards.
