This position will perform a variety of responsible law enforcement and crime prevention work, including patrolling assigned areas, answering calls and complaints, investigating crimes, serving civil papers, and providing court room security; enforce all federal and state laws and local ordinances related to public safety and welfare.

WHAT YOU’LL DO

• Performs routine patrol duties, including but not limited to patrolling assigned areas of the County; responding to emergency calls and/or public calls for assistance; investigating disturbances, prowlers, burglaries, thefts, vehicle accidents and other crimes; checking buildings for physical security, etc.

• Administers first aid in emergency situations.

• Issues traffic citations.

• Serves warrants, subpoenas and civil documents.

• Apprehends and arrests suspects and violent persons; transports prisoners; seizes property and/or criminal evidence; interrogates suspects, witnesses and complainants; gathers and preserves evidence.

• Assists with County search and rescue operations.

• Prepares various reports on investigations, including arrest and unusual incidents observed.

• Assists with criminal investigations as required.

• Prepares case files; testifies and presents evidence in court.

• Works with other law enforcement agencies in matters related to the investigation of crimes and apprehension of offenders.

• May serve as special duty officer as assigned, including responsibilities such as serving on the narcotics task force, serving as Deputy Coroner, providing court security, serving as school resource officer, serving as K-9 handler, serving on gang task force, etc.

• Participates in other special projects and programs as assigned.

• Performs duties related to crime prevention and community relations.

• Performs general administrative work, including but not limited to attending meetings, preparing correspondence and reports, entering computer data, maintaining files, answering the phone, etc..

• Performs related duties as assigned.

This position performs a variety of work in the monitoring of county, state and federal detainees and maintains the security and safety of inmates and staff.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

• Performs booking procedures, including receiving, booking and assigning prisoners to cells; performing body searches; fingerprinting, and photographing prisoners, etc.
• Maintains custody of prisoners’ private property.
• Maintains the safe and orderly operation of the County jail facility; monitors security cameras and door warning lights; screens and monitors visitors. Inspects all of inmates’ incoming and outgoing mail and telegrams.
• Inspects facilities regularly.
• Monitors the condition and activities of prisoners.
• Prepares prisoners for court appearances; provides transportation as necessary.
• Administers First Aid in emergency situations.
• Performs general office work, including but not limited to entering computer data, copying and filing documents, etc.
• Prepares and submits required records and reports.
• Performs related duties as assigned.

 

Under general supervision, provides a variety of routine to complex clerical support services within assigned police areas, including but not limited to: typing, word processing, transcribing detailed and confidential material, record keeping and filing, and assisting with the administration of the Police Department’s budget. Performs related work as assigned.

 

CLASS CHARACTERISITICS:

The Police Office Assistant is a journey-level position, fully competent to independently perform a variety of office support duties. All positions are characterized by the presence of fairly clear guidelines from which to make decisions and the availability of supervision in non- routine circumstances. Specific duties, including the amount of typing, word processing, and use of on-line or personal computers, will vary with the organization unit to which assigned.

 

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES (illustrative only):

• Types correspondence, reports, and specialized documents related to the functions of the police unit to which assigned from drafts, notes, dictated tapes, or brief instructions, using a typewriter or word processor.
• Proofreads and edits as necessary typed and other materials for accuracy, completeness, compliance with departmental policies and correct English usage, including grammar, punctuation, and spelling.
• Enters and retrieves data and prepares reports from an on-line or personal computer system, following established formats.
• Prepares and updates a variety of reports which may require the use of arithmetic calculations.
• Maintains records and processes forms such as payroll records, purchase requisitions and orders, and others specific to the organizational unit.
• Provides clerical support to the department in the implementation of operational business plans.
• Assists in the administration of internal and external contracts for interagency services with other agencies.
• Assists the Police Office Coordinator with the administration of the department budget by monitoring the budget for variances, recommending budget transfers, and balancing the overall budget at year-end.
• Establishes and maintains office files, researches and compiles information from such files.
• Provides factual information regarding City or unit activities and functions.
• Accesses confidential local, state and federal databases.
• Views and handles confidential backgrounds and personnel files of prospective and future employees.
• Reviews computer produced reports for accuracy and makes corrections as required.
• Operates standard office equipment and performs such office support activities as opening and distributing mail; processing outgoing mail, erasing dictation tapes and ordering supplies.
• Issues and maintains identification files; seals juvenile and adult arrest records.
• Receives subpoenas, notifies appropriate parties and maintains subpoena files.
• Handles confidential information, including case files, criminal information bulletins, fingerprints, and other related material.
• Serves as the Police Department’s back-up liaison to the Finance Department on matters concerning the Police Department budget.
• Processes the Department’s payroll and time sheets.

Summary
Under general supervision, oversees meal service operations including food preparation, menu planning, and inventory and ordering service products and produce; monitors kitchen staff; and performs other duties as assigned.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Establishes rotating breakfast and lunch menus, researches recipes and cooking methods, assem­bles the necessary ingredients, prepares meals for on-site dining, and serves meals to participants.
• Estimates appropriate food requirements for projected number of patrons; places orders for food and non-food items.
• Inspects food and rotates items for use to maximize freshness, discards out-of-date items, and monitors food stocks and supplies to meet patrons’ dietary needs.
• Ensures accurate supply deliveries, proper storage of produce to extend shelf life, and appropriate breakdown of orders for inventory and budget tracking; assigns orders to correct accounts.
• Researches nutritional needs of base customers, attends meetings with vendors, educators and dietitians to expand knowledge of recipe modifications, plate presentation and nutritious food preparation.
• Maintains accurate digital records pertaining to food preparation standards and kitchen proce­dures; maintains clean and sanitary service areas, facilities and equipment in accordance with state health department rules and regulations.
• Provides training and instruction for kitchen staff, including volunteers, on meal preparation procedures and standards, and proper operations of a commercial kitchen according to District guidelines to ensure compliance with all safety and health regulations.
• Accurately collects payments from customers; timely earmarks and directs invoices from vendors for proper accounting of charges.
• Develops and maintains positive relationships with partner agencies and food and supply vendors; interacts positively with customers and volunteers.
• Maintains professional knowledge of food service delivery and serves as commercial kitchen expert to Health Department personnel during annual inspections.

Other Duties and Responsibilities

• May be required to drive District or personal vehicle.
• Participates during disasters or when emergency response is needed.
• Performs related duties as assigned.

Qualifications
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge, skill, and/or ability listed below is qualifying.

Education/Experience
A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be: graduation from high school or GED equivalent, and 2,000 hours of relevant work or volunteer experi­ence related to food-service delivery; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

Language Ability
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Effectively communicate in English. Prepare routine written correspondence using correct spelling and grammar.

Math Ability
Principles of basic mathematical functions including addition, subtraction, multipli­cation, and division in whole numbers, fractions and decimals.

Reasoning Ability
Effective use of common sense and sound judgement in solving customer-related issues and concerns.

Certificates and Licenses

• First Aid & CPR/AED within 90 days of employment with ability to maintain certifications thereafter as a condition of employment.
• Valid California driver’s license with a good driving record and current automobile insurance.
• Possession of a Food Handler’s Card or ServSafe Food Handler's Card or the ability to acquire one within the first month of employment.
• Department of Justice fingerprint clearance.
• Proof of a negative TB skin test.

THE POSITION

This is a recruitment for the entry-level class of the Police Services Aide series.  Incumbents perform work according to established procedures and routines, although an employee may be required to make decisions involving emergency circumstances.  Detailed instructions are given on assignments and work is reviewed while in progress.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

Work Environment/Working Conditions:

Under the supervision of the Volunteer Program Manager in the Visitor Services Department, this position will primarily report out of a designated Midpen field office (Cupertino and/or La Honda), which will include volunteer projects and administrative tasks. This position also works from home approximately one day per week (as approved) and occasionally at the Administration office in Los Altos.  Volunteer initiatives directed by this role may take place across various preserves requiring regular travel to and from the locations.  The Volunteer Program Lead’s schedule requires working at least one weekend day as part of the regular work week schedule, with an option to be on a 9/80 schedule after an initial training period plus occasional evenings and holidays.

 

The Volunteer Program Lead is a fairly independent position that supports the work of one or more departments within the agency, requiring solo work in the field, frequent site visits, and hiking steep terrain in wildland areas with poison oak and wildlife. Field work will also require driving a District truck in remote areas on unimproved dirt roads in inclement weather conditions. Work in the field may also include exposure to loud noise levels, road hazards, vibration, confining workspace, chemicals, mechanical and/or electrical hazards, hazardous physical substances and fumes.

 

Ideal candidates will be comfortable working in these types of field conditions, as well as in an office environment including some full days of program administrative tasks using various software programs and applications on a computer, phone, or tablet.

Additionally, candidates should be familiar with the principles and practices of trail building, construction, repair, and maintenance, including site planning and resource protection as well as the tools and equipment required for maintaining and repairing open spaces and related facilities.

 

This position wears a prescribed District uniform and adheres to strict safety procedures and work habits. Depending on the exposure, employees may be required to wear head, hearing, eye, foot, face, hand, or other protection equipment.

• One (1) year of experience in evaluating, surveying, or monitoring of natural resource systems, OR
• One (1) year of experience in trail construction, maintenance, and/or repair of parks, open spaces, and/or related facilities.  
• Bilingual skills are highly desirable.

Licenses & Certifications Required:  

• Possession of a valid California Driver’s License.
• Possession of, or ability to obtain, Basic First Aid and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification within six (6) months of employment.
