The Police Officer Trainee is the entry-level position for those who have not yet attended the Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) certified training academy. The academy is a six month long process and the first step in your law enforcement career. After successful completion of the academy, officers perform a variety of law enforcement duties to protect life and property in accordance with applicable laws.

Trainee's starting salary is $30.68 hourly (while attending the academy), plus excellent benefits.

THE POSITION: 

The City of San Rafael is recruiting for a Police Officer. This position performs a wide variety of peace officer duties involving the protection of life and property, enforcement of laws and ordinances, criminal investigation, crime prevention and suppression.  Police officers prepare cases and provide courtroom testimony, provide information and assistance to the public and perform special assignments in areas such as patrol, traffic, investigations and gang enforcement.  General supervision is provided by the Police Sergeant.  Responsibilities may include the direct supervision of officers in training and/or the indirect supervision of other officers and/or support staff.   

This position performs the following essential job duties:

• Patrols an assigned area in a radio car, on motorcycle or on foot to observe and report suspicious activities or hazardous conditions for the prevention and detection of crime; arrests law violators in accordance with applicable statutory and case laws.
• Answers routine and emergency calls for protection of life and property and the enforcement of City, County, State and Federal laws, codes and ordinances.
• Investigates crimes, accidents, deaths and disturbances; collects, preserves and presents evidence using scientific identification techniques; interviews, questions and/or takes statements from victims, witnesses and suspects and completes investigative reports.
• Directs traffic, including regulation of vehicle flow at emergency or congested places, stops drivers who are operating vehicles in violation of laws and issues citations or warnings as appropriate.
• Appears in court to present evidence and testimony in connection with criminal prosecution and/or civil cases; serves writs, warrants, subpoenas and other legal documents.
• Provides information and direction to the public; assists in developing community policing strategies; maintains effective public relations and makes public service appearances.
• Provides emergency first aid and/or assistance to injured or incapacitated persons and requests additional emergency medical services as necessary.
• Searches, guards, transports and assists in the booking and custodial care of prisoners.
• Handles missing person cases; takes custody of runaway or delinquent juveniles; investigates child welfare cases involving potential mental, physical or sexual abuse.

This position drives a Readi-Ride General Public Paratransit Vehicle (GPPV) on a demand responsive curb-to-curb transit system and assist patrons boarding and leaving the bus, especially the elderly, disabled, and school age children. The Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) is a 15.7 MDG sub-regional facility that serves an estimated 164,545 customers  administering the annual operation and maintenance budget over $12.8 million with a staff of 34 professional and technical personnel.  The City of San Mateo is building a team tasked with the safe and continuous operation of the current expansion of this conventional activated sludge plant by introducing new facilities including; preliminary treatment, primary treatment, enhanced biological nutrient removal/membrane bioreactors (BNR/MBR), biological and chemically enhanced treatment (BioACTIFLO), and additional upgrades to existing process equipment. A vital and instrumental member of this team is the WWTP Operator III.

The Position

This position will receive general direction from the Chief Plant Operator and instruction from their Shift Supervisor to provide daily guidance to lower level operators and trainees. The WWTP Operator III will be responsible for supporting these efforts to guide, develop and mentor staff on their assigned shift, act in a supervisory capacity in the absence of the Shift Supervisor, and is the assigned lead in getting both scheduled and unscheduled work completed. San Mateo Medical Center is seeking an experienced Surgery Scheduling Specialist for a Full-Time, Extra-help position for the Surgery Department. The Surgery Scheduling Specialist provides technical, complex and specialized administrative support to surgeons and patients scheduled for surgery, which includes interaction with operating room staff and patients; handles multiple competing priorities; interacts with diverse customer groups; handles multiple patient-related tasks such as tracking patient financials to ensure information is correctly entered; and moves patients from the clinic to the operating room, including all pre-operative processes necessary for the patients prior to surgery, pre-op process sheets and clinic schedules, data entry of items into the operative database, financial reconciliation, and post-op order sets, and may have some responsibilities for ordering supplies or equipment.

The ideal candidate will have the ability to work with challenging patients, and patients who may have a language or communication barrier. This position will require attention to detail, and therefore the ideal candidate will possess strong organizational skills and the ability to multi-task.
 
NOTE: The ability to speak, read and write in fluent English and Spanish is preferred for this position.
 
 Duties for this position may include, but are not limited to, the following:

• Tracking patient financials to be sure they are correctly entered.
• Scheduling patients in the procedure clinic.  
• Updating the pre-op process sheet and clinic schedule in the computer.
• Entering data into the operative database.
• Interfacing between the Operating Room and Surgeon.
• Ability to schedule patients using the OR manager program.

NOTE: This Job Announcement was edited on May 16, 2023 regarding the definition of the extra help assignment. This is an extra-help, at-will assignment, paid on an hourly basis. Extra-help hours are dependent on the business needs of the department and therefore work hours may vary from week to week. Extra help employees shall not exceed 1,040 hours of work per fiscal year. Some extra help positions are eligible for benefits under the Affordable Care Act. Extra help employees are not guaranteed permanent status at the end of the assignment.

 

Qualifications

Knowledge of:

• Medical terminology as related to patient services support work.
• Policies and procedures related to patient services office support and hospital or clinic business office activities.
• Office administrative practices and procedures, including filing and the operation of standard office equipment.
• Basic business data processing principles and the use of word processing or computing equipment.
• Proper form for typed materials.
• Business arithmetic, including percentages and decimals.
• Correct English usage, including spelling, grammar and punctuation.
• Record keeping principles and procedures.

Skill/Ability to:

• Perform technical, specialized, complex or difficult patient services office support work.
• Organize, prioritize and coordinate work activities.
• Read, interpret and apply rules, policies and procedures.
• Organize, research and maintain patient and general office files.
• Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of the work.
• Compose routine correspondence from brief instructions.
• Make arithmetic calculations with speed and accuracy.
• Use initiative and sound independent judgment within established guidelines.
• Operate standard office equipment, including a word processor, personal or on-line computer, and centralized telephone equipment.

Note: Specific positions may require the ability to type at a rate of 40 net words per minute from printed copy.

Education and Experience:
Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to qualify is:

One year of journey level office support experience in a patient services setting.
